Today I learned that getting hacked is like death by a thousand paper cuts. They get into one of your accounts, but the rest will follow. At first I thought all those 6 digit verification codes were phishing scams, but today I learned they were legit.
So sorry to hear this happened, it’s a perpetual worry.
If you haven’t done so in the past, put a freeze on your credit report at reporting agencies so they can’t try to open credit cards or bank accounts in your name. Instructions are at https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Credit_freeze
Thanks. That is probably a good idea. I have always associated that with a stolen social security number, but I don’t want to take any chances.
I’m learning to use AI a LOT with the shop drawings for precast concrete I develop. So helpful. Whenever I find myself thinking, “I wonder how I can do X,” I ask AI and it usually has an answer. And now my client is picking up on it and developing tools himself that I can use. I think I will still be needed for awhile, but my job will probably be automated at some point. Glad I’m close to retirement age, anyway.
Today I learned (or at least understood finally) what a kong is in mahjong.
Today I learned about a phenomenon called somatogravic illusion.
My friend had a pretty serious hack which they think was associated with having a landline (at least that’s what Comcast told her). She stopped it but was told by TransAmerica that she should lock her account and it seems they locked it down totally and she can’t get in online. They also claimed she didn’t send back some form they sent to her (she’s lived in the same house for 30 years). Anyway, now she has to get a form certified with a medallion stamp (which is like a super notary?).
Her money is so safe that she can’t even get to it.
She did get rid of her landline.
What did I learn today ? That some people are really stupid.
And you didn’t already know that
?
Is that a TikTok challenge? Here is another idiot…
I learned we have a skinny guest bathroom that cannot fit a standard size vanity or toilet.
Today I learned about the Abilene paradox
I did not know this term, but an example of this that is frequently brought up is Kennedy and the Bay of Pigs. None of his advisors wanted to go counter to what they thought was the collective opinion, when in fact they all felt it was a bad idea.
I was excited to learn this phrase and this story as I actually have been to Coleman, Texas!
Interesting. We used to have a division leader at work that would talk about “the trip to Abilene” in similar context.
Fascinating! I knew about groupthink but not this variation.
Maybe it explains our road association’s dysfunction.
Wasn’t aware of the term but I did learn long ago that often it only takes one person to say what they really think to change the whole group opinion and I’ve been that person. It is an interesting thing to watch in action. Looking at the example of the road trip all that was needed was for someone to say “it’s really hot today and that’s a long ride”. No need to be “the bad guy” but just point out the obvious.
