My co-worker’s home is being redone for one of “those” shows. I’m learning a lot about the process. Today, the film crew came in for their “homeowner interview” and covered up every company logo in the home. Refrigerator, stove, even the hand soap and remote control.

I learned how to make a protein shake using black beans rather than protein powder. I’ll never go back.

Yay! Can you share the recipe, please?

I’ve been doing 1/2-1 cup (depending on how many calories I’m aiming for) of black beans, 1 frozen banana, 8-12 oz of almond milk, 1 scoop of collagen powder (I use marine collagen), 1 Tbs cocoa and 1 Tbs of PB2. It’s comes in between 26-34 g of protein, almost no fat and 10-25 g of fiber. It’s already sweet enough, but you can add a few drops of stevia. I swear you don’t taste the beans.

There are lots of recipes on YouTube. I got this one from Getting Healthy with Stasia.

I don’t know how regular protein powder tastes (I’m allergic to dairy), but vegan protein powder is gross. These taste so good. Like a real treat and the beans make them so creamy. I just cooked up a batch of dried black beans in the pressure cooker to have on hand for the week. It was so easy and costs just pennies (compared to the $3.50-$5.00 per serving I was paying for my vegan protein powders). I wanted to make my own so they didn’t have all of the sodium of canned beans. It was really easy. Just add the beans and water to the pot (no need to presoak), set for 35 minutes and walk away.

How do the beans affect the taste?? I can’t quite imagine this!

I swear you don’t taste them at all. I even had my family taste it without telling them what it was and they all said it was good (my daughter really liked it andsays it’s much better than the premade shakes she buys). When I told them it was beans, they said even knowing what it was, they couldn’t taste it.

I going to try other flavors/ bean combinations next to see if they work as well, but I like the chocolate ones so much I’ll be happy with just those. I did end up buying an e-book of bean shake recipes from Getting Healthy with Stasia from a YouTube link after I tried the black bean shakes. It was like $5 so I figured I had nothing to lose.

I have learned a lot about Habitat for Humanity as a friend’s ds got a townhouse through them. I also learned that a lot of people have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the program works.

I learned last night that we can keep D on H’s employee insurance even after we die as long as she remains unmarried & disabled. I was having great difficulty finding a carrier who would let us buy Medicare G and allow us to suspend for the rest of our lives, as she will not pass underwriting and just started Medicare B.

I’ve worked on Habitat for Humanity builds in Africa. The program works quite differently there to how it works here.

You are never too old to make a new friend. It was fun listening to Dad, age 98, happily talking about a fellow he met at the local senior center.

We met a nice couple at beam radiation. The man has the same oncologist as H and I really liked them. We saw them yesterday as he was just finished with his last treatment. I suggested we get together for a party and he asked for my email. I provided it and will see if he reaches out. We had seen them several times (radiation is M-F, every day). Both the man and H are getting prostate cancer treatment. If he contacts us, I think H could use the support.

We have some Opuntia’s growing in our yard. I have an old copy of the American Horticulture Society’s plant encyclopedia that says that it is not hardy in our yard (in the northeast of the US), but over the past 28 years I have never managed to convince the Opuntia’s and they continue to do well and flower every summer.

One thing that I have learned regarding Opuntia’s: Rubber cement. If you get a large number of thorns stuck in you, cover them with rubber cement. Wait till it dries. Repeat. Rub off the whole thing (dried rubber cement and thorns all stuck together).

I learned I should take advantage of my (very good) medical insurance and get a full panel of labs every year.

Waited two years and should have done much sooner. A friend gets hers done every six months!
