The evolution of the Lilly Pulitzer thread got me thinking of fashion choices of yore … And got me wondering what you wore to high school? The more specific the better! What brand were those jeans? What style of t-shirt?
Jeans and T Shirts to school? Not when I went to HS! We had to wear dresses or skirts. Senior year, they allowed culottes!
But when we wore jeans outside of school, my preference was Lee jeans. They just fit me better than Levi’s, which is what everyone else wore.
I don’t recall wearing T shirts…we wore Oxford cloth collared shirts…my favorites were yellow and blue.
We also had to wear dresses or skirts. We once had a huge blizzard and a girl wore pants because it was terrible out. They sent her home.
We wore Villager skirts and sweaters. Peter Pan collars. Circle pins. Very early 1960s!!
Culottes! Remember gauchos?
A grey gabardine uniform skirt and blazer.
And shirtwaist dresses too!
" Alligator " shirts , Deans sweaters, Levi and Calvin Klein jeans. Clogs , down jackets, Bass Weejuns, Topsiders, Chris Craft suede sneakers, wrap around skirts , wide wale corduroys , button down shirts , Paapagallo espadrilles Bean Boots, chamois shirts from Woolrich, Lilly Pulitzer dresses ( for which I was shamed on a spring break in Florida ) turtle necks…sometimes layered with an alligator shirt, Deans Sweater and yes, the chamois shirt,'twas a sweaty , yet preppy existence in the late 70s, early eighties
I dressed almost exactly as Donna in That 70’s Show did until they stuck her in Catholic school. I’m almost positive she wore some of the same exact clothes I had. Brand names weren’t as big where I lived, though I remember finally being able to get my hands on some Levi’s cords. My sister and I were the same size, so we each had 2 pair and swapped them back and forth. There were some Bobbie Brooks brand things, I remember. For tops I wore layers in the winter-think t-neck sweater with an oxford-type shirt over it and maybe a vest or jacket over that. Outside of school, tennis or gold style shirts and a few tee’s.
I did go to Catholic school up through 6th grade and in NH-heaven forbid you wear PANTS in 3 feet of snow and 20 degrees! How we didn’t all end up with frostbite, I don’t know. I think somewhere around 3rd grade they finally let us wear pants under our dresses and skirts-but only for recess. I nearly did handsprings around the school when pantsuits were allowed INSIDE too.
We got to wear pants in 7th grade! I don’t remember any brand but they were bell bottomed. I don’t remember wearing t-shirts. I do remember wearing either maxi dresses or mini skirts.
I must be old…end of senior year we could wear pants. Other than that micro mini skirts, JAX shoes, and a gucci belt (Gucci was new here then) and dresses. Picture Trisha Nixon Cox. Saks had dresses for 28, 30 or 32 dollars. Thirty two dollars was EXpeNSIVE. And Aviator sunglasses from Paraphenalia.($12 each…much too expensive) I waited a few weeks and got them at J Magnin for less
Late 70s. . .I remember mostly jeans (Levi’s) and t-shirts. Painter’s pants were a fad. Designer jeans (Calvin Klein?) became popular. And cowel neck sweaters. Vague memory that guys not wearing underwear with jeans was a thing?
(Very vague memory. No personal experience, never saw the evidence myself. . .)
Betsey Johnson dress, that barely covered my butt.
Betsey Johnson baby wale cords that covered my bare trap platform sandals.
I had a hard time finding jeans to fit because I had no hips. ( still don’t have much-white girls- )
I did have Levi’s, and swabbys, but they had to be taken in. We could not wear jeans in jr high, but I’m pretty sure we could in high school, I remember wearing Oshkosh overalls, that I liked cause they stayed up and I did not have to hem them.
Didn’t wear tshirts. I wore blouses & tops from Miss b’s place.( later the Brass Plum)
Op shirts and shorts were popular for awhile, Docksiders with the laces done up in those curly knots, espadrilles, wrap skirts, jeans, and those purses with the wooden handles and the covers with buttons you could change to match your outfit. Monogrammed sweaters and oxford shirts.
Some of that may have been middle school but it’s all I remember right now.
“Culottes! Remember gauchos?”
Apparently they are supposed to be a fashion rage now:

What I wore? Jeans (Levis?) and generic shirts. Basically whatever fell out of the closet when I opened it.
Chemin de Fer (sp??) Jordache, Shrink to fit 501s, and Dittos for pants/jeans. Lacoste and Polo shirts, lacy ankle socks, Gunny Sack dresses for special occasions. Boys wore Hang Ten shirts, cords and Wallabys in junior high. By high school it was Levi’s and preppy shirts/t shirts.
Looking back, the thing that made me laugh was the double layered polo shirts with the collar “popped”, and the big hair. I single handedly kept Aquanet in business in the early 80s!
I went to an all-girls high school so we rarely had “free dress,” but when we did we would dress pretty nicely…our chance to express ourselves!
There didn’t seem to be as many “brands” as there are today.
I remember those Chemin de Fer jeans! I saved up my babysitting money to get a pair with the two rows of buttons like sailor pants in 8th grade! I was 5’10" in 8th grade, so they were floods on me.
We went to the garment district in LA. No way was my frugal dad paying 40.00 for a pair of jeans at the local mall. And yes…the Dittos sailor pants…I never got a pair. Wanted a pair but had to choose, so I got the saddleback style in pale pink.
Elephant pants and tops with bell sleeves.
Oh yea, painters pants.
Gotta love pockets.
The popular store to shop at was Jeans West. ( it’s an Australian chain, but I think the Bellevue one in the 1970’s was either local or from CA)
It was similar to the Lucky stores, in that it was unisex, and had kind of a peacenik vibe.
But the swabby jeans they sold were supposedly from military surplus, so they didn’t fit girls who were 5’2"& 105 lbs.
But they were * mandatory* so I took them in.
We also made lots of Jean skirts, inserted fabric to make bell bottoms, sewed our own halter tops…
