I have 3 boys and I agree with DMD – hands are very useful to hold/carry stuff to bathroom – no shaving kit, no plastic caddy, no plastic baggie. Plain and simple and cheap. But they do all wear some kind of flip flops.

A brown paper bag – oh, wait, not that kinda stuff! Never mind.

Why do I have the feeling this thread is going to rank up there with the bedding and lofting threads as an example of the seriousness with which parents approach the college experience? ;)

The old fashioned shaving kit is still the best choice, as it provides discretion for holding those more private items like condoms. Don’t forget to pack fingernail and toenail clippers, comb. It can hold a travel pack of 15 personal cleaning cloths.

A responsible parent will include a travel pack of Playtex personal cleaning cloths, space bar of soap (small, travel size) and spare bathrobe for your son’s female guest for the night, just in case she needs to sneak down to the community shower for a quick shower “before” or “after.” Even pack some of that shampoo that kills body lice…SERIOUSLY !!!

Well, DS also said the BBB basket was “gay”, but I don’t know what would be more practical. Well, mabe it can serve to corral stuff in the dorm room, even if it never finds its way to the shower.

my son uses a small white tote (Target) with a handle. Carries his shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, shaving cream…etc. Just can’t get him to wear flip flops in the shower…ewww.

or if it is like my daughters school, they have abasket of condoms in the bathroom!

Why bother?

I have no doubt my S uses hands and no carrier. The shaving part takes up a lot of room but is irrelevant on a daily basis…if S shaves once a week it’s a good week, not because he shouldn’t but because he’s too lazy. For guys I think this is common…plus any carrier would get gross quick enough, what male college student is going to clean and/or disinfect it properly? And he puts contacts in in his room, another unsterile mess I’m sure, and you don’t have to take the deodorant to the bathroom. So most lazy males are only carrying a towel, toothbrush with paste, and soap (and shampoo on a good day) which can easily be carried with the hands. I recall buying him a nice carrier but he never used it (looking back this was entirely predictable) and yes he too would call one “gay”. But depends on the kid I suppose.

I was shocked that my son actually used the Lysol I sent with him. My “lazy male” must be seeing things that even he thinks are ugly. Lots of ugly germs are out there, the local pediatrician told me they have had lots of MRSA cellutilits. That makes me think it is probably in the dorms also.

Actually - if they could make empty six-pack cartons in plastic with small holes stamped in the bottom to let water in, that would be a perfect bath tote for guys - it could carry their shampoo, razors, soft soap, etc…and would not look too dorky. I’ll checkl with my S - maybe it could be a family project!

The basket my Ss use has holes. I don’t know if it’s too dorky. Neither has ever expressed an opinion about the look of things.

Hey crash! Awesome idea! I want one of those!

Crash, I think you have come up with a perfect solution! I see millions in your future!! :)

At 9 pm, prior to leaving for college next day, we made a trip to BB&B; got the clear tote, which has holes in bottom. Also got sheets, mattress down pad, cover, collapsible laundry bag, etc. It was only time S agreed to shop. I figure things have a better chance being used if he picks them out. Also has large shaving kit in bright orange, which he’s used for camp many years. I don’t know if he uses the other stuff. Oh yes, we got laundry detergent in concentrated circles; this eliminates any need to measure.

Okay - we’ll do the totes in surf blue, hunter green, and black. Is there a patent lawyer anywhere around?..

AH! Plenty on the Law School forum!

As the OP I want to thank everyone for the suggestions. I guess I’ll just buy something black and hope for the best. We use ziplocks when travelling, but boy do they get scuzzy fast!

Also, I really want to thank the person who made this tremendously helpful suggestion:

I’ll be sure to throw in some tampons for her as well (not). (Is this for real?)
