What do I do if my new stepparent did not file taxes for 2015?

My mom recently got married to someone who hasnt filed taxes because there is no income to be reported.
What do I do?
I know im legally required to put his income tax because they got married but im confused.
I did my first fafsa just fine cause for my freshmen year my mom wasnt married.

also, they have never filed together of course they were single before this

If he wasn’t required to file taxes then he wasn’t required to file taxes. He will likely need to complete a non-filers statement for each college detailing why. Then the colleges won’t be wondering where his tax return is.

And from 2016 on he and your mom can file their tax return as married filing jointly, even if only one has income.

Was he your stepdad in 2015?

@techmom99

Your FAFSA marital status is as of the day you file the form.

@thumper -

But what about if they weren’t married and didn’t file taxes together in the year they are using for the FAFSA? Are they entitled to his single status information? Although if he had no income and that’s why he didn’t file, it can only help the OP, right?

All I know is I have filed FAFSA year after year since 2008 and gotten a grand total of $500 in aid, so maybe I am not one to be discussing FAFSA.

So your mom’s new husband has no job or any type of income whatsoever? How did he pay for his expenses?

@techmom99 as far as I know, the mom would indicate that she is now married, and report income from 2015 for her and husband.

I guess in this case she would select “won’t file” for him and put $0 income (if that is the case, or the income he made, if it was less than filing threshold).

If she filed a single return, she should be able to use DRT on her 2015 return I think.

Then the stepdad might have to provide a verification of nonfiling letter from the IRS, or a form from the school.
