<p>What am I supposed to do if an emergency happens at home or if there’s a nuclear war or something and we can’t fly??!</p>

<p>I’m going to assume that by “emergency” you mean a family emergency (sick relative, car accident, etc.), or you fear that something will happen to you and you won’t be able to contact your family soon enough.</p>
<p>I’m sure you realized when you picked a college so far from home that you’re not going to be able to return home at a moment’s notice. But assuming your parents have access to a phone/computer, you’ll at least be able to get in touch with them quickly. Just make sure that they have at least two ways of contacting you directly (cell phone, Skype, landline phone in your dorm, and so on) and for extra security, you could give them your roommate’s/RA’s number (but make sure they know that it’s never okay to contact your rooommate unless it’s a real emergency; that happened to one of my friends–repeatedly–and it drove her up the wall). And obviously, make sure you have your parents’ numbers written down in more than one place. If you’re going to school in another country, it’s also ideal to have at least one contact person (relative, family friend) in the same country.</p>
<p>Catch a flight home?</p>
<p>Some things you’ll miss. Aged cat’s last moments suddenly happens? You’ll miss it. Random cousin pops out another kid? You very well might miss that, too.</p>
<p>You have two options:</p>
<p>1.) Fly
2.) Don’t go back home</p>
<p>If the first option is not an option, then you will have to take the second option. I’m assuming that you live in Florida and are going to college in Alaska, or the other way around.</p>
<p>As an adult, you will just have to be prepared to handle these cases or delegate someone to be able to handle it. Sometimes, it’s impractical to go back home, even in an emergency. You’re going to simply have to accept that and get used to it. How did you think the world functioned back in the days of horse carriages?</p>
<p>Finally, keep in mind that you can be killed (and thus rendered unavailable regardless of circumstances) at any time! Drunk drivers these days can be quite unpredictable.</p>
