I have submitted, by mail, information to NYU Stern for the MBA program which I plan to attend in the spring. When I track the item with USPS I receive the following message:

“We attempted to deliver your item at 11:08 AM on July 12, 2008 in NEW YORK, NY 10003 and a notice was left. It can be redelivered or picked up at the Post Office. If the item is unclaimed, it will be returned to the sender. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.”

What would be the proper course of action? Should I call USPS and ask for this to be redelivered? Can the sender request re-delivery or is it strictly up to the receiver?

At this point, it’s not up to the sender. Obviously, the mail carrier tried to deliver your package on a Saturday, when the office may not be open. This is probably not unusual. The recipient, upon receipt of the notice, will take the necessary measures to retrieve your package. If you really want to follow it up, you could call the NYU Stern office and make sure they received the notice and/or what their procedures are in this type of situation.

The problem is I can’t afford to have those documents lost in the shuffle; they are official transcripts and things of that nature that would take me months to obtain once again.

K- my suggestion, is fax copies of everything with a cover sheet, and a copy of the notice you got from USPS. This way, they have some paperwork to start with, they will have a way to track the package in case your note got lost, etc.

Colleges get packages all the time that require signatures and most likely it will be redelivered on Monday.

But for your peace of mind, send in a fax, not an email, with the information and copies. This way, when you call on Monday, you can say, I senta fax just in case it takes a day or to for the package to show up.
