What do I do with my life

Hi everyone! I am currently a rising junior, and though I am prone to get the “you’re too young to think about your major/college”, I would have to blatantly disagree. It’s all that is ever running through my head and influences the majority of my decisions- that’s bad, I know, but help your stressed teen out.
As an immigrant from Uruguay to the U.S, issues regarding immigration have dictated my life and my involvement in politics. I have always longed to have a powerful presence and voice in a failing system, whether it be tackling issues such as women’s rights, gun control, immigration, etc. and I turned to possibly having a career in political science…but it seemed too broad. However, I feel as though I’d like to have a much more worldly presence, and thus I began looking into international relations. It made sense for me, considering I speak fluent English and Spanish, I am in French 2 and hoping to study French abroad next summer,I am currently learning how to speak and write Portuguese (lots of Brazilian family so I understand it very well), and am planning to learn either Arabic and German/Italian (I REALLY LOVE LANGUAGES). Yet it still feels like what I do in school isn’t enough to go to good schools reputable for their I.R programs, because I am also a very artsy student and love to spend my time doing musical theatre, plays, choir, and improv comedy. I decided to make time next year to join my schools Model U.N, but I am still not sure how I will perform in that. I would like to go to BU, NYU or USC because of their good I.R programs that blend well with the art scenes in those cities. What are my chances, and what can I do inside/outside of school to improve that? Here’s some information on me:

Documented through DACA

-Member of school newspaper, student council, art club, drama club, link crew leader, spanish service club, GSA, and Imagine (sexual assault awareness/prevention), lead roles in upcoming/previous school musicals and school plays

  • Co-captain of the Improv comedy team, vice president of Thespians, and planning to create my own minority empowerment club and a French club
    -Spanish and History tutor

GPA: 3.85 (unweighted)
I know it’s kind of low for some schools, but I had mental health issues my freshman year and I got help, got a 3.95 and 4.0 these last two semesters of sophomore year

ACT: 24 (Also very low, but I didn’t study for it and I was very sick the day I took it, I hope to get a 30 eventually)

Regular volunteer in my city at the Centro Hispano, giving back to my Latino community through serving food, holding activities, teaching English classes

Very active in community theatre, made the prestigious 2016-2017 Actor’s Academy at the Children’s Theater of Madison where 20 auditioned and only 3 made it

Good idea with choosing a school that is strong in both. Maybe apply as a theater major and then change later. That’s better for major cognizant universities and then you have an edge by sending in additional work because you are an arts major.

Hi @teenbot,

Keep your head up and continue all the good work you’re doing! Do not worry so much about whether or not you get into a “good” school, because what’s important is what you make of your experience. There are pros and cons to every school, no matter the reputation.

As you start applying to different colleges, I want to remind you to not let cost hinder you from applying to the college you want to attend. There are many scholarship opportunities out there specifically directed towards students with DACA. One great opportunity is called - Golden Door Scholars. From your post, it seems like you will be graduating in 2018 so you will be eligible to apply next year in your senior year of high school. I encourage you to periodically check their website then.
