What do I need? (Please help me out!)

Right now, I’m a Junior who just got his October SAT results back-

Here are the colleges I want to get in- Here’s the catch though- I need to get a decent amount of financial aid to attend any of them.

Duke (Probably too high)
Davidson
UNC (Chapel Hill)
University of Florida (Honors) (My “Safety”)
Wake Forrest
Furman University

Race- Asian American. Can speak Chinese with some difficulties.

My GPA- Around 3.9+ UW my Senior Year
(Predicted, for the most part, but I’ve made a commitment to get straight A’s or die for the rest of my HS career… I goofed off during Freshman Year, got two B’s both in Spanish, because I suck in it. Sophomore Year- all A’s, and this Junior Year my first semester is straight A’s already, so I shouldn’t have a problem)

Curriculum- Pretty Intensive. IB Program; My senior year I will be in Calculus II, Spanish 5, Biology and Chemistry High-Level (meaning I’ve taken 3 progressive years of both), English HL (4 progressive years), US History II, Theory of Knowledge (Some BS IB required class)…

SAT I: (First and only try)
Critical Reading- 800
Math- 780
Writing- 650 :frowning: (I messed up- Hopefully I can make this up with a awesome admissions essay, and it shouldn’t matter that much anyway since it’s mostly ignored)

SAT IIs:
Haven’t taken yet, but I am going to take Literature, Math IIC, Biology E, Spanish, and Chemistry. Given that I’m preparing for them a year in advance, I expect at least a 760+ on all of them.

AP Tests:
Same with the SAT II’s, but I expect a 5 in all or most of them.

EC’s-

Eagle Scout (Probably my biggest)

Weightlifting Team 10,11,12. Varsity for 11, I don’t know about 12. (Iffy, because some mega-jacked guy could possibly move down/up a weightclass and take my spot- Our school has won Weightlifting State Championships for like 10 years in a row, it’s ridiculous) (I got a J/V 5 Star Conference 1st Place for weightlifting, my only award)

Mu Alpha Theta- 9,10,11,12. Already have a couple of minor awards, but nothing that really matters. (YET) Position of Treasurer for this year, I don’t know about next.

5 Mission Trips for Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief with Church Youth Group, working in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity (Around 1 week each, 66 hours each week) (So 330 Service Hours)

Nursing Home Volunteer- Managed Thursday “BINGO” Games for 2 years. (Around 60 hours right now, going to get 100 more hours by the time college applications go in)

ESE Math Tutor (At a different High School)- (Around 150 hours, going to get around 100 more by the time applications are in)

So that’s about 740+ Service Hours, not counting the ones I earned in Boy Scouts.

Remember, I have one more summer where I could earn some big EC points if I really tried, so that’s not the end of it. I’m thinking of either some MAJOR service (as in spending ALL summer doing volunteer work), or… well, i don’t know. But it’s not going to go to waste.

Minor EC’s-

NHS- I don’t know if I’ll be able to get any positions though, that’s only senior year and I doubt I’ll win a damn popularity contest.

Spanish Club- Same as NHS.

National Merit Semi-Finalist- I haven’t gotten it yet, but I’m almost positive I got it. Refer to SAT scores above.

“Hawk of the Month”- (Some award selected by all the Foreign Language Teachers each month for outstanding students)

My question is- To get admitted, and get a little financial aid-
What more do I need? Where will my application be weak and flawed? What should I spend the time I have before early admission applications are due? (Around 1 year). And what are my chances?

And also- If anyone has any ideas of WHAT TO DO WITH MY SUMMER that will make the most impact, feel free to share! Muchas gracias!

Here’s a link to the Furman scholarship page. They have just started 10 pretty much full ride scholarships for students out of the state of SC (if you are in SC they have 25 full rides per year!)

Also, they have a great Asian studies program and perhaps you can use this to your advantage since you know Chinese. Don’t be shy. I recommend all applicants to use every possible advatange to the fullest.

[Furman University Admissions](engagefurman.com)

As far as the summer, try to do 1 summer college program or in internship. Several schools, including Furman have 2 weeks programs. Or get to a Governors school summer program or Boys State, etc. The rest of the time get a job and start saving for college!

So based on my projected application (This should be almost right on the money)… What are the chances for this?

Sorry dude. If I could predict this I’d be a billionaire on Wall St.

I can guarantee one thing; if you don’t try you definitely won’t get it

Well how is the overall strength of my application? My main concern is are there any critical flaws or weaknesses that need to be addressed?

No one? :frowning: Just take a peek, it can’t hurt.

Bump. Help a fellow out! :)

If you really want to go to Duke and/or UNC-CH, check out the Robertson Scholars program ([Robertson Scholars: Homepage](http://www.robertsonscholars.org)). I believe it gives you full tuition, and you can go back and forth between the two campuses.
