What do I tell her?

KKmama’s D and my S started their programs as freshmen, so we can’t help you with any other majors. You might get some info from the grad school section of this web site, but because schools are so different, your best bet is to have your D contact a few schools she would consider and find out what they require. Many require at a least a year of health care experience and I’ve heard of students getting their EMT license and working for a short time to get that experience. I think it’s a harder route to take, so I hope she can continue on at her current school.

Check the requirements at various schools. As I posted from Marywood, there are required courses that must be taken, and they must be courses for science majors and not survey classes.

Also get her started on documentable hours of interactions with direct care. It is VERY difficult if possible at all to from college to PA programs. Most who enter at the professional phase (as opposed to the ones who start pre-PA as freshmen) have been out working in the real world in other medical professions.

And you’ll need to find a school that allows people to enter the graduate/professional phase without coming in as freshmen. That is getting increasingly difficult to find.

I just checked a couple of the PA programs in PA just for ideas for you. No two schools have the same admissions requirements. Gannon says they are not taking admissions into the graduate phase. DeSalles and Arcadia require a 3.0 GPA for all sciences, and include the dreaded organic chem as a prerequisite. Medical hours vary from 300 at Kings to 500 at the rest (with one exception at a lowly 30). Some schools have requirements for English, psychology, and statistics.

You really will have to do a lot of research to see what options there are for your daughter.

The program D’s friend attended- didn’t actually require, only recommended Ochem as a pre-req.

Right, I know many of the schools require a great deal of clinical experience before admission. I think she plans to get her CNA license this winter and may eventually get her EMT license so that she can put in the hours. I don’t think she expects to go straight to PA school. I guess i was just curious if others had taken other undergrad majors and then go to PA school. She already has a lot of the prereqs taken care of. I will look up some schools and see what they requre. MA College of Pharmacy does not require Ochem but they do ask for a lot of clinical. I have noticed the wide range of hours required to some of the schools. Weird.
