Economics

-not just about graphs
-most people will never use macro, micro is where the important stuff is

Neuroscience/genetics

that is exists (neuro majors switch to chem/bio after 1st yr so a handful graduate from neuro each year)

genetics is NOT where we engineer your fruits n veggies…

it has nothing to do with kidneys (several people think this!)

Mechanical Engineering / CS

Mechanical Engineer =/= mechanic. I cannot fix your car.

electrical engineering

isn’t just about the generation and transmission of electrical power.

actually, some areas of study have very little to do with electricity

totally rules

Athletic Training
-we aren’t sport coaches
-we aren’t PE teachers
-we aren’t personal trainers
-we ARE Health Care Providers!
-we don’t just tape ankles, fill water bottles, and give out ice
-we ARE Qualified Health Care Providers!

Sports management

-We’re almost entirely uninterested in managing sports teams
-Most of us realize that becoming a sports agent is impossible, so we have no interest in that career
-Just because it’s perceived as an easy major doesn’t make us unintelligent
-We’re not severely limiting our employment options

I could go on and on…

Chemistry:
-We don’t all make meth in our dorms… LSD is far more exciting
-We aren’t all pre-med… Some of us didn’t get the memo that General Chemistry pays nothing

Biology
-Biology and Zoology are NOT THE SAME THING. I don’t really care that you think giraffes are cool, NOT MY MAJOR!
-Ditto for Nutrition. We don’t discuss in my classes exactly how much red meat is too much, which vegetables aren’t as healthy, ETC.
EDIT
-More for people considering going into bio…if you’re opting for biology because you couldn’t stand chemistry…rut row.

Biology (also):

Math:

Chemistry

Communications

it’s a very broad major that covers a lot of areas. You could major in Communications and work in public relations or you could major in Communications and be a TV reporter

there ARE jobs for Communication majors, and I do have a plan for what I want to do with my degree

being a Communications major with a media concentration is a really cheap way to avoid going to film school. Yay for film production classes.

Linguistics:
-is not about learning lots of languages
-doesn’t mean we all speak a lot of languages
-isn’t about looking down on “incorrect” grammar
-doesn’t believe in “incorrect” grammar
-can lead to many lucrative and rewarding careers

Classics

What it is

I think its a pretty broad statement to imply that macro is essentially worthless compared to micro

Most economists are microeconomists and never use macro, macro is just the sexy stuff that gets on the news and is often wrong.

Does not mean you can fix someone’s tv, It does mean you can tell the person why they have white dots on it though, but they wouldn’t understand it.

Micro is wrong just as often as macro…and you do realize that there are an equal number of macro and micro economists? Nothing is more “sexy” than the other…Macro makes the news more becasue it covers national and international events, by definition. The New York Times isn’t going to print a story about the cost analysis of XYZ corp in small town, USA deciding what to produce. Fact is, both are useful in their own ways.

[Mark Borgschulte - PhD Preparation Classes](Mark Borgschulte, University of Illinois - berkeleyclassesirecommend)

I’m not going to search for other sources, but I know they are out there…That is just a grad student, not an actual economist. You also do realize that almost all micro decisions are made in the macro framework? You can’t have one without the other. It is true that you decide to specialize in one or the other, and then refine it more, but you need to be aware of it all to have informed research and papers. I’m saying this as someone in applied micro/devolopmental

Biology:
-we don’t all want to be doctors
