What do they call new music that is usually

I love Mumford and Sons. So there.

Pizzagirl, no one can ever accuse you for jumping on or off the bandwagon unless you want to.
:)

I wouldn’t even mind hipsters so much, if they would stop drinking PBR.
Beer in a can?
Ooh, that reminds me, I have a dogshead in the fridge.

I think you are conflating the concepts of hippie and hipster. If anything, Axl Rose and Slash of GNR more closely resemble the true hippies of the late 60s and early 70s in both sound and style than do Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers.

I don’t really have a complaint with national acts like Mumford and Sons. I just get subjected to a lot of local wannabes who don’t bother to learn their instruments, and totally can’t sing. And I guess I do have a problem with the whole hipster “ironic” thing. I like when people are passionate and sincere and unafraid to care. That’s what I love about old school country music. And opera as well, but that’s a whole 'nother can of PBR.

Hippies>>hipsters. Same basic gene structure with new added irony.
Axl Rose would puke on you. He came from Stones and Robert Plant. Not drum circle hippies spinning hippies.

It’s odd what appeals to you - that it doesn’t have to make genre sense, I mean.

Agree that Mumford and Sons, Lumineers are b-list, at best, but like the voice of the female vocalist with Of Monsters and Men. Only a little bit of Adele but most all of Neko Case.

John Doe of X, described best as the perfect ‘lounge lizard’ voice, is on the top of the list.

barrons, of all the people who could puke on me, I would really hope it wouldn’t be Axl Rose. And I don’t mean that ironically.

I never listened to gnr. During that time, I think I was listening to Raffi and Tickle Tune Typhoon.
I like Duff mcKagan though, especially his acoustic stuff. But Axl Rose? @@
(Howdya like my guitar teacher? Isnt he adorable?)

I second the John Doe love…in both the X incarnation, and the countrified Knitters. I confess to being a fan of that L.A. based electric country sound and particularly John Doe and Dave Alvin, previously of the Blasters.
While it does have a dose of hipsterism you can hear these guys and many more this October for free in Golden Gate Park at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. I’m looking forward to Steve Martin on banjo with Edie Brickell, Richard Thompson, Robert Earl Keen (great Texas bar band guy), Bonnie Raitt, Billy Bragg, and many more.

There’s so much music available. Why waste time criticizing? Why not listen to what you like?

I want to go to GG park so bad. but we are already going to follow PJ for the west coast leg and H says we cant go:(
i havent seen Bonnie Raitt since she played WOMAD.
Oh hell, The Flatlanders and Butch Hancock?
:frowning: :(

Ironic you’re acting the arbiter of good taste considering listening to 80’s hair metal bands in my old NYC neighborhood was considered very cheesy even back in my childhood/adolescence. A notion which became very apparent once grunge/pop-punk took over in the '90s and hair metal ended up being left in the dust.

Not to say I am against all metal as I’ve grown to appreciate some metal groups as I’ve grown older. However, bands like GNR are associated in my mind with long haired dudes doing silly stage dances in spandex while singing love ballads accompanied by distorted or not so distorted guitars.

Hindsight is always 20/20 eh cobrat?
What did you listen to in the '80’s?

I listened to whatever was playing at my friends’ apartments, boomboxes on the street, and passing car stereos. A mix of Madonna/Whitney Houston, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Fat Boys, Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson, and various tunes from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Didn’t have a musical playback device of my own until I was a college freshman. First music I bought for myself used was Green Day’s Dookie, Weird Al, and Offspring’s Smash. :)

I miss the Beastie Boys. Rip MCA.
I guess I was playing more besides Tim Noah & Peter Paul & Mommy.
The Clash, REM, Marshall Crenshaw, Elvis Costello, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Cindi Lauper,
Meat puppets, Go-Gos, The Pretenders, The Cars, The Police, Ramones, Talking Heads…
They were all around in the early '80s, I just didnt get to see any of them live until the next millenium.
I also had friends who went on to win the very first MTV basement tapes contest & they were unabashedly a " hair" band, but they were good musicians & a few of them are excellent. They all put on a great show & they still do, even if they dont all have enough hair to thrash around.
Be sure to check out the lead singers knee high fur boots if you ever tour the EMP museum in Seattle.
( he wore them with spandex of course!)

Some of the attitudes here about music are just as pretentious as how you claim hipsters are pretentious. Yes, we know none of you would ever listen to anything top 40 and it’s sooooo cool to trot out obscure band names to prove your cred.

barrons, who cares what Alice Cooper thinks? Do you share a set of ears?

I find the Lumineers underwhelming but do like Mumford and Sons. They use a banjo! There is such a range in the pop stuff right now, from what I would consider total uninspired cr*p to some really brilliant music. My favorite song of the past year is Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian with Lupe Fiasco. So much talent. This live version is amazing.

Alice COOPER? Talk about limited talent and a gimmick. School’s Out is fun, Only Women Bleed is fine, but beyond that? What’s he ever done beyond look ghoulish?

And Guns n Roses? Seriously? That’s like listening to Ozzy Osborne.

Give me real songwriting and artistic talent any day.

Sitting here with my popcorn and enjoying the “I am so less hip than you and that makes me hipper” scorn. " Enjoy!

I’ve actually learn to like hair metal bands in my old age. Especially these cuties: [Apocalyptica - Enter Sand Man - YouTube](<a href=“Apocalyptica - Enter Sand Man - YouTube”>Apocalyptica - Enter Sand Man - YouTube)
