I discuss National Merit and “URM” on the second page of my guide: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/955109-silverturtles-guide-sat-admissions-success.html.

“NHS” stands for National Honor Society, which is a common club/honor. It is essentially worthless in college admissions, though.

URM- n. ‘Under Represented Minority’. Refers to certain races/minority groups that typically don’t apply for college/have worse grades compared to the rest ex) African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans. Provides a very strong bump in acceptance (not THAT much, unless you’re native American where you can get in ANYWHERE)
(opposite would be Over represented minorities like Asians, who typically are well… smart)

NHS- National Honor Society. It’s like a club you join if you apply and get accepted (must have certain GPA or activities, varies by school). A pretty basic club that’s not always all that prestigious or cool, but just something everyone should have

National Merit btw is a status or award you get for scoring a specific number on the PSATs. Usually has to be higher than average but a certain amount. If you score high enough on the PSATs, then you qualify to be this, and potentially move on earning you a scholarship
