I was recently accepted to Yale for transfer, and I wanted to know what the social scene at Yale is like. Because Yale is in New Haven, I assume there isn’t much to do on the weekend other than party. I’m more of a dinner-and-a-movie person. So, it’s important to me to know if everyone at Yale just parties on the weekend or if people do other things (For example, are people interested in seeing movies or just hanging out?). Do you think that people who don’t party on the weekend feel isolated or out of place at Yale? Thanks for any replies!

sleep…

Those of us who don’t go out and party rent movies and watch them in our common rooms with our friends, or we go to see our friends perform in theater or music or dance shows, or we get a group of people together and go to one of the thai or indian or pizza restaurants near campus, or…

Basically, there are lots of different things to do on weekends if you don’t like to go out and party. I suppose I felt a little isolated at first, but it was only a week or two before I made a ton of non-partying friends, so the feeling certainly didn’t last. If you’re not a partier, you might have to look a little harder to find people to hang out with on friday and saturday nights, but there are plenty of us around, and i guarantee you’ll find people who are interested in doing the same non-partying things you are :-P

and yes, “sleep” was a good answer too… :-P

Well, there definitely is not a lack of people who enjoy a good movie on a weekend night. There’s a Blockbuster on Chapel St. that’s really close by if you want to rent anything.

I pee on secret societies’ doorsteps.

And by that, I mean, I read DS books.

Of course people at Yale are interested in seeing movies or “just hanging out” at times… it is a COLLEGE, after all! :)

That said, from my brief observations, stereotypical college partying seems to permeate the Yale social scene more than other comparable colleges, perhaps because New Haven doesn’t provide too many other social venues. As with any mid-sized school though, the social experience is mostly what you make of it!

most ppl plot in secret societies and exchange large sums of money

There is so much to do at Yale - environmental groups, music groups, publications, community service groups, intermurals, etc. Some spend time docenting at the museums on/near campus, going to plays on campus and at the local theater - some take part in outdoor club activities and outings, and many kids get together with a few friends for dinner a couple of times a week. My D, who is a soph, has done all of these things - and would be stunned to hear someone say that there is nothing to do at Yale accept party. One thing that distinguishes Yale students is just how involved they are - (they also spend a fair amount of time being “the audience” for their friends’ concerts, plays, etc.)

Don’t worry - you won’t have enough time to do everything you want to do!
