Hugs @snowball.
This sounds so tough, @snowball. I hope you’re able to find out what the trouble is and that it’s treatable. Sending hugs.
Hugs @snowball
Ask your vet about Cerenia. It is an anti-nausea drug that can improve a dog’s appetite. I have been giving my senior daily injections for several months. Her health and appetite are stable now.
@Snowball, thinking about you and your four legged love. It’s so hard to see them struggle.
@MaterS , actually we just added Cerenia Saturday before she got so bad. I didn’t give it to her yesterday or today for fear it was part of the problem, even though she has had it in the past.
I am actually at the vet now after dropping Ms P off early this morning. Hopefully the report is good. She walked a bit this morning to potty, but wanted to stop once she was done; she had no interested in doing more than a quick pee. My husband was able to get her to eat a few treat, but we were not able to get her to drink; maybe while she was here she finally drank something.
Well, labs and x-ray do not look good
While the vet told me yesterday she thought there was a mass in Ms. P’s abdomen, we needed to wait for the radiology report. Her spleen is enlarged, and while it could be benign, the guess is, it isn’t. The next step would be an ultrasound guided biopsy to see what is there, but if it is cancer, my understanding is it is fast growing. The labs took a nose dive since the last ones 2 months ago, so obviously, she is sick.
While I just gave my husband the news while at work, he is wondering if we even bother with the biopsy. He wants to know first, what are the chances she has something benign, or infection, and can recover from this. If very slim, he thinks (at this moment) that we should just let her be and try to let her enjoy a few days with us. We hate seeing her like this, not eating or playing; not how we want to remember her. This is not a money things as we would pay whatever to keep out dogs healthy and happy, just trying to be realistic.
We have a tough decision here and will “what if” it all day. My vote is the biopsy at this time, but we may talk to our vet a bit more. In the meantime, Ms. P had a scramble egg this morning which was hand fed to her, as that is the only way she will eat the few bites she eats. Our other dog is feeling left out as he is getting a bit ignored. I took him to day care yesterday to play with his friends and will try to get him to the dog park today once my husband gets home.
Are you giving her sub Q fluids?
Ms P had another bad day and the decision was made to not make her suffer any more. My vet is off tomorrow, but she said she wants to come in for us. The ultrasound and biopsy are going to tell us what we already know, so we didn’t want to put her through that.
I hate seeing her so confused and what we assume is pain. For the last several hours, she has spent her time staring at the wall in a place and position she never is. It is almost like she can not sleep as she just lays there with her head facing the wall.
I don’t know what our other dog knows or senses. We will take him for a nice long walk tomorrow, something we have not done with him in a good while as Ms P wasn’t able. He is so good about just going with the flow; he can hike all day or spend the day chilling; either is fine with him. That said, I think he will be real excited to be back in the woods for his hike and jump into the river
@snowball, I am so sorry. It is never an easy decision.
Oh, @snowball. I’m so sorry for the sadness you’re enduring but I think you’ve made the best decision under the circumstances.
It happens to all of us who love our pets. And it’s never easy.
Hugs to you and your husband, @snowball.
We are waiting for the vet to call us back. I thought several days ago that it was time for our old girl to go, but DH didn’t agree. The dog can barely walk and collapses every three feet or so. She peed all over me and the floor this AM when I got her up to go out, and then later in the day when she was outside, she crapped on herself. I finally kind of shamed DH and got him to get on board.
It’s sad, but watching her have no quality of life is sadder.
I am sorry, VH. Always such a tough decision but it’s the best gift you can give her.
So sorry. It definitely sounds like it is time. That is exactly what was going on with our old guy 2 years ago and also with our last old girl a year ago. You can see it in their eyes, too.
VH, sending you and your sweet girl love and hugs.
I think it is better to err on the side of letting them go too early Than too late. If too early, you the human are missing your pet earlier, but your pet hasn’t suffered. If you wait too late, your pet has suffered, and you still end up missing your pet.
Thank you all for your kind comments.
DH spoke to the vet (who is also his cousin). The vet isn’t in his the office this weekend, so DH will bring her to his office on Monday. I wish it were sooner, but it is what it is.
@VeryHappy Thinking of you during this time and understand what you are going through. It has only been a month for us, and I still choke up at times talking about Ms. P. My husband will not put her leash or collar away; he says it is too soon. Our younger dog is doing ok, but he does miss her; we have to be careful about saying her name too loud; otherwise he looks for her.
Thanks, snowball. For better or worse, we have two other dogs (yeah, we’re nuts --) so I think everyone will be OK. Our other two are not sure what’s going on with the senior citizen, but they know something’s up.
In our city, there are mobile vets who will come to your house and euthanize your dog in familiar surroundings. If you have that available to you, please consider it. Why should your dog suffer through the weekend…?
