H and always said paying tuition for our kids was like buying a new car every year, driving it off a cliff and buying a new one every semester.
So, if your childr n have all graduated, what are you doing with the e"extra"

Paying my tuition.
Goodness, I just realized that I made the last payment, so need to figure out how to use that windfall!!
Start doing the bigger ticket house maintenance we’d put off for years. First project was to re-do the kitchen we’d been wanting to do for 20 years. Also pay off debts in preparation for retirement.
I paid off my PLUS loans. It took me roughly 2 years after my 2nd kid graduated.
Wht extra money??
If we have a little extra once my youngest graduates, I may offer to help him with the cost of a new car (his tuitions was cheaper than others), or just keep it in the special account until someone decides to go to grad school. There won’t be much left.
Maximizing my IRA contribution.
Took a deep breath of relief. Saved any ‘extra’.
There’s never any extra money. You just go on to the next thing you’ve delayed or neglected. We have been paying private school tuition since first grade, so you’d think it would be a big bump up when it stopped. But no, there’s always something else. Now when we’re through paying off debt and have extra money left after paying the bills…there will be the roof, then landscaping, then something else major.
We need to patch and paint our house. We have termites. Our kitchen needs an update. Our flooring has taken some hits. All of these things have to wait because I have one more to go and one who will be starting pharm school.
I have one more year of tuition. That will be 17 years I’ve been paying tuition. I hardly know what to do with myself. We have a 5 year plan to retire so it’s not so much an unexpected addition, but rolls into the plan to pay off the house and save. The continuous repairs and updates just comes out of current income.
We’ve increased the amount of money we’re saving toward our retirement each year. We’ve also been a little less frugal about spending money on travel, entertainment, and hobbies.
We don’t have any extra money after paying tuition, probably because we have had to tap into savings to pay for their education.
But I get the sentiment. We paid for day care, activity lessons, clothing, an extra car, etc., plus making mortgage payments. Now that the house is paid off, and the kids are gone, you’d think we’d be rolling in the dough. Instead we’re living more frugally than before, because we don’t know what the future holds in terms of our health.
We are paying grad school tuition for D2.
We are like @busdriver11: we need a new roof, our landscaping is an embarrassment, and it turns out our wood floors are so scuffed up because the guy who re-did them before we moved in four years ago didn’t do them correctly. -Bid we received yesterday was $8000 to strip, sand, re-hand scrape them, stain, and move furniture in and out.
We increased amount we are putting into our investment accounts. Also taking a few more vacations and I’m currently having both bathrooms completely gutted and renovated. We are fortunate though as H will have a large guaranteed pension when he retires from the State (will still work though likely consulting.)

Paying for a wedding
We are happily able to be more comfortable in retirement than we had anticipated. We are also able to give our kids financial boosts for their retirement accounts/living expenses. We are also able to dine out LOTS more than cooking at home whenever we want.
We had paid for a total of 7 years of private HS, 4 years of preschool, 7.5 years of private college and 1.5 years of community college. It is amazing not to have all of those expenses any more!
Retirement and other savings. Period.
We have 1 more year to go. She is considering Grad school. We have told her we will pay the tuition but she is on her own for living expenses. The other two are self supporting so we do have more spending money.
Our bank account is increasing. We enjoy traveling and our last few trips have been for longer. We feel like we have the money and that are children don’t need us so readily available. Our biggest change is that my H has someone working for him that he trusts and is so reliable and sharp that he feels he can be away more. That has changed our life’s the most.
Our house will need painting soon and our landscaping after years of drought is pretty sad. My H has been dreaming of buying a boat but I’d be shocked if he pulled the trigger. He is way to frugal and he is fully aware at how much money a boat sucks up.
Plus we do have a wedding next year and probably one the year after.
Pay off houses, cars, maybe a bit of grad school for D, we’ll see! @artrell Wedding :((
