What do you like and what do you dislike about CollegeConfidential?

Just wondering :)

College confidential sometimes makes me unconfident

What I like: Good source of info about anything college-related in general

What I don’t like: “OMG MY GPA AND SAT ARE SO BAD CAN I GET INTO HARVARD WITH A 3.99 AND 2390? MY ECS SUCK TOO I ONLY CURED AIDS AND INVENTED A TIME MACHINE!!!”

^Could not agree more NerdyAsianKid :)

I like information garnered from students and parents which can’t be found anywhere else.

I dislike people wasting everyone’s time by posting items they don’t know. For example, “I think I heard the deadline might be January 15.” Thanks for wanting to help, but if you don’t know the deadline, don’t post anything. A better answer would be “I received an e-mail stating the deadline is January 15.” That is definitive.

I dislike people wasting everyone’s time by asking questions for which they can find the answer simply by going to the college’s web site or doing a simple Google search.

I dislike people criticizing my answers rather than refuting them. Again, it is a waste of everyone’s time to snipe rather than provide useful information.

I dislike threads in the wrong forums and moderators not moving them to – hey, wait a minute … this thread was started in the wrong forum.

I know that most people on here are looking into more of the “elite” Ivy League type of schools. But, there must be others going to many other schools that are not of that status but they are only rarely mentioned. In other words I think many people look down upon the lower tier schools and then if someone doesn’t get into their dream school they feel they have failed.

Nerdy I couldn’t agree more either. It sickens me when people on here say that you need a 5.0 gpa and a 2500 SAT score in order to get into Harvard. Apparently to have a good shot if you cure cancer and AIDS. -_- What I like is that some of the advice that people give. Some of it I actually use.

beolein, moderators are volunteers and can’t monitor every one of the thousands of threads on CC. If you see a thread in the wrong forum, use the “Report Problem Post” button. We’ll see the report and move the thread if we think it’s appropriate. We rely on members to help make CC a great community!

MainLonghorn: Thanks for the advice. I wasn’t disparaging moderators. Your posts are always great. I was simply saying I didn’t like it.

I like the layout of the site: it’s very clean and easy to navigate. Thumbs up for that.

I saw quite a few wrong threads and reported them. However, I was told that the Report Problem Post was to be used only for spam and the like so that’s what I’m only reporting now.

I like the organization and layout

I dislike the criticism.

I like that, as a forum, it tends to select for intelligence such that nobody here is a complete idiot. I like that there are forums for nearly every school and the community is very helpful.

I dislike like that there are the same three threads in every forum, that many people are very entitled and the East Coast elitism that I see all the time. Also, I must say I don’t care for the colors.

I like that it made me more knowledgeable about college admissions, especially at top schools, than the college counselor at my school. My friends would probably look at me weird if I started talking to them about college stuff and my parents never even went to college, so this forum is a real help.

I don’t like the trolls.

I’m essentially repeating everything that has been posted here.
I like the fact that people offered to help me with my essays while I was in high school. I also appreciated the stats threads.
On the other hand, the official stats threads also caused stress because I felt so tempted to compare my stats to accepted students which usually resulted in lowered self esteem. Also comparing schedules bothers me. I mean, I remember coming on here as a senior and seeing freshmen taking 7 AP’s while I was taking 5.

see the definition on urban dictionary

I like the wealth of information of anything involving college admissions from SATs and Aps to the actual process and selection of colleges. In particular I like specific people that seem to help everyone ( and for free!). I’ve read both Xiggi’s advice and Silverturtle’s advice so far and was impressed by what they had to say for SATs and such. Also, I find it funny that this website is helping me more than my guidance counselor…

I don’t like the chances section, particularly when someone posts having a high SAT score with numerous Ec’s and perfect ( or nearly perfect) gpa. I hate debates that use up space and argue about the same points over and over again. I also don’t like the fact that many people seem to be geniuses here and boast about how high school is easy and that Ap’s are a piece of cake.

Overall though, I do like this site, although I don’t post as much as I read. :)

Honestly, there’s not much I dislike about this site. Good information, good banter, good people - I’ve recommended it to several friends.

There are a few things I find mildly annoying, though.
(1) I wish there were some formatting options (font size, font style, alignment, etc.) displayed when submitting posts. In the same vein, I wish there was also a better way to quote other users - PhysicsForums, for example, has tabs near the bottom-right side of each post that allow you to easily quote (or multi-quote) other users. Not big issues here, but having to type every little thing into BB code gets old after awhile.
(2) There should be more subsections for transfer students.
(3) There shouldn’t be a time limit for editing your post.

Other than that, great site!

I like the HSL ■■■■■■ – they’re hilarious. I also learned about self-studying on here, but I may very well be the only person who enjoyed that. I like reading success stories, like this one: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/admissions-hindsight-lessons-learned/940151-different-success-story-please-read-if-youre-still-high-school.html</a></p>

I don’t like how CC encourages a ‘grind’ mentality – APs til you drop and laundry list ECs abound; I’m not a fan of people encouraging someone to go into debt for school that’s ranked #35 instead of going for a full ride at a school ranked #40, either. I don’t like the fact that anyone can go on here and post false information, ranging from “I got into Yale with 1200 SAT (on all three sections)” to “UChicago is a safety school!” I dislike the drama queens that spam every part of the site with threads like, “OMGZzzzzz!11111!!! PLEASE HEEeeeeeeeeeEEEEELLllllllllllPPPPP!!! jkdhf fdhgjkfgjkgvhjdvkdfjkvhdfjhjv I SENT IN A TEACHER REC BUT HE PUT “SHE’S A GOOD STUDENT” instaedz of “SHE IS A VERY GOOD STDENT” ARE MY CAHNCES ROOINED 4 LYFE???”

Chance me threads.

Nine times out of ten they’re just a bragging opportunity and the other 10% of the time it’s the kind of thing that CC users can’t answer; it’s borderline or an unusual situation that would really depend on the individual adcoms.

I hate how a lot of threads go unanswered… Is there a more helpful college advice forum?

Oh yea I also hated how there’s are so many sub groups…such as this one cafe, that I randomly clicked… Haha
