What do you need for classes?

I’m going into ENG, and I have no idea what I need to buy for my classes. Usually, when I go school shopping, I buy 100 paged notebooks for all my classes and a folder. Of course, pencils and pens are also included.

My sister is a pre-med student, and to her classes, she says she takes her laptop, a notebook, pencils and pens. She recommends that I get a tablet for college.

What do you think? Should I get a tablet for college? Do I only take writing utensils, laptop and a notebook to all my classes? What about books? Do I not need them for my classes?

Thanks for your reply! :)

Unfortunately these days, colleges don’t send out a list of school supplies. There are typically books or readings of some sort for every class. You can find out ahead of time what books you will need by looking them up on the Illini Union Bookstore website, or the TIS bookstore website. You can even reserve them, too! Or purchase them. If you feel like waiting til classes actually start, each professor/TA should hand out a syllabus on the first day of class that will explain everything about the course (or it should). However, you won’t know what books you should get until you register for the fall semester. It depends on which class whether or not you need your book for the actual class. Some classes, you can get by without doing any of the reading. Depends on what kind of student you are, and why you are really in college.

Note-taking materials might be a good idea if you plan on taking notes. Some people like to take notes directly on their laptops, some bring voice recorders, others still use old-fashioned notebook and pens/pencils (like myself).

I highly recommend laptops over desktops.

i’ve never seen anyone use a tablet yet to take down notes. remember, if you put all your notes on a tablet and end up getting your tablet stolen or breaking it…you’re basically somewhat screwed unless you have a friend who’s in the class. also they’re pretty pricy. it’s basically just more convient to have them in a notebook you can just take and go and start writing in right away.

pencil paper. maybe a laptop. … ipod or a voice recorder
