I desperately want to get into Stanford University.
I live nearby, my dad has gone there, and it’s been my dream since I was a little kid.
I am currently a sophomore.

My current classes are:
AP Calculus AB
AS Chemistry
AS English II
Spanish III
Honors Western History
Video Production

Possible: AP Computer Science A (online)

Summer classes: AP Calculus BC, Physics

Community Service Hours: 300hours (240 from summer camp over the last two summers, 60 hours for a school club)

Extra Curriculars: Tennis

Passions: “Entrepreneurship” – I have 4 ideas of potentially successful website ideas. I am currently working on my first- I have no finished it yet, but am planning on launching it within 2011.

So yes, I virtually have nothing to really help me out.
All I have to wager on are my websites.

Are they enough to help me make a underdog success story?
Or is this not enough? If so, please please please give me advice.
I have three more potential years to do something.

Things look good for you so why do you feel you are an underdog? How are your grades? You seem to be on the right track with your courses and have your ec’s, sport, and passion. So just make sure the grades are there too and you should have as good a chance as any.
Good luck!

I’m intimidated by people posting on this forum, and all the great stuff that they’ve done.
I only have one EC too…

Can you join some clubs in school? That would help round you out a bit. As a sophomore you have time. If there are no clubs that you would like to join perhaps you could create one, like a website design club, where you create websites for local mom and pop businesses. Or perhaps you could just do that on your own. That would show some leadership, entrepeneurship, initiative and community service. You don’t have to have tons of things on your resume. You just need to show a passion for something and the fact that you’re willing to move forward with that passion.

You have some time to work on this. You can do it. Good Luck!

Oh one more thing… while you’re working at the camp getting service hours try and secure some leadership positions. Take on extra responsibilities so you can talk about that and show that you’re a “take charge person” if indeed you are.

I’m in a community service club right now, and I am the Vice President. (not many members though, we’re working on recruiting).

I would create a web design club, if I was actually good at it. The things I’m working on take so much longer than a tech-wiz, but I am not one. I merely have the ideas.

Thanks for the ideas, I love this website!

Thats great that your the VP of your community service club. The size doesn’t matter but if you can “grow it” then that will look good. Again, that takes leadership, creativity, initiative etc.

As far as the web design club, I am not tech savy at all, so I’m probably using the wrong words. The main point is to take your talents and use them. Take what ever you do and expand them.

For example: My S loved fishing. That was his passion. So he started to give free fishing lessons to local neighborhood kids. Then he branched out and contacted some boy scout troops. Because the groups were large (12-15 kids) he then 'employed" the help of his friends who were fishermen. Then he contacted the local park/pond and started to give free lessons as part of their Summer in the Park series. After that, the park trustees asked if he would create a private fishing club for them. He created the licenses, applications, handled the membership dues, organized fishing tournaments, and secured a sponsor.

So you see what I mean by taking your skill set and making it into something more?

Hope this helps… Good Luck Again

Well we got quite a few people showing interest, so hopefully it’ll grow larger
I can build basic websites, so that does seem like a good idea. I’ll try to see how to expand this, and actually get people who are interested.
That’s super impressive of your son! He definitely deserves it. I hope I can find something that will grow into something that impressive.
