What do you think about this strategy for Science?

Usually fighting scientist section is hard one for me. If I had little more time on remaining passages, I believe I can get more questions correct.

If I gave little more time to remaining sections and then quickly guessed on fighting scientist section with the hope that out of 7 questions 2-3 questions would go correct? Would I come out ahead? Has anyone tried this strategy?

It depends on what score you are aiming for.

If you are aiming for a score in the low to mid 20’s it should help IF you know for a fact extra time on the other passages will help you. While time is the biggest obstacle for most (and I’m assuming it is for you) there are some people whose scores wouldn’t increase with extra time, so do a trial run or two and see if it increases the number you get right on other passages.

If you are aiming for 28+ I wouldn’t recommend it. Theoretically, you should only only get 1.75 right with this strategy, so at most you’d probably get 3-4 and there is a chance of getting none right. The scaling could be especially harsh, and missing even 4 could knock you down to a 29 or 30 - and missing all 7 could knock you down to a 26-27. It’s too big of a risk if you want a top score.

If you’re taking the September ACT you might have to just go with it. But if you aren’t take it until October (or later) you should have time to find and practice a new strategy. I have found one that helps me. I read Scientist 1 first, and then answer all questions pertaining to scientist 1 only. Then I read scientist 2, and answer the remaining questions. It helps me keep each scientist straight and I don’t get confused, and I save time because I don’t have to refer back to the passage as much trying to figure out which scientist said what. You could try that strategy to see if it saves time.

I took the Act in April. I did basically what you said I finished the science section and saved the fighting scientists for last. I think i had like 3 min maybe, so I had enough time to quickly look at the scientists arguments, look at the questions, and make educated guesses. I think for 2-3 of them I made blind guesses. Overall I got a 33. Idk what you’re aiming for but at least for me it was a sound strategy. I would recommend it. Make sure you work quickly though.

I’m aiming for 30-31 in Science. Right now I’m in 27-28 range.
