Here’s a different approach:

Those are hilarious. Especially the first one.

OMG, those are fantastic!!! So different from when I was a girl!

My dental hygienist told me the other day that she takes a birth control pill that prevents her from getting her period completely. She said she hasn’t had one in several years. So different from when I was a girl!!

And then there’s the diva cup. So different from when I was a girl!!!

What I love about those videos is the celebration of menstruating (and the normalizing of bladder leakage) – instead of trying to hide it, as I did for my ~35 or so years. So different from when I was a girl!!!

I will never celebrate menstruation. It sucks. I’ve had a Mirena for 10 years, so I don’t have to deal with a period.

I’m not a fan of boxing as a sport, so the ad kind of lost me, but I see what they’re aiming for and I like the sentiment.

^^^Another product they didn’t have back in my day. (I went through menopause about 20 years ago.)

Diva cup? Mirena?

@Madison85 , I LOVE those! What a hoot!

There’s also this song “Crimson Wave” by Tacocat.

I can’t believe all the pain I’m in / give me white wine and Vicodin

I actually didn’t like the first ad. Sure it’s fine to be tough, but all types of women get their periods, not just the bleeding athletes.

Another new product is Thinx period panties - so absorbent that that is all you need (!). For some reason, their ads were considered too controversial for the NYC subway system. Eventually they were accepted and it’s hard to see what the fuss was about.

Not sure I get the whole egg connection in that print ad.

I think boxing is just horrifically gross and that was a complete turn off to me. Plus, I don’ t need tampons anymore.

My D swears by her Diva cup. I remember trying to use the Today sponge 30 years ago and being completely unable to, so I think Diva would not be for me. It just seems so unsanitary, though my D says it is not.

I had something like the Diva cup 20+ years ago. It was messy to change, but more sanitary than tampons since there are no tiny spaces where trouble can grow. Took a little getting used to at first but then it was fine.

I don’t get those eggs either, doschicos, but they are evocative of something!

Well, I know eggs symbolize fertilization but its kind of the opposite to that, no? haha.

That egg wasn’t fertilized, so then comes the period?

I hate blood, pain, boxing, sports injuries, and periods. So happy not to have them any more. Never anything to celebrate. (Probably why I got pregnant 10 times and spent 10 years breastfeeding.) And I miss those bad old days when we didn’t have commercials for tampons, viagra, lubricants, condoms, adult diapers, etc., etc. Actually, I think some of the first tampon commercials came out when I was in high school. I remember my brother making jokes about it, and my sister told him he’d better shut up–or else he’d find a used one under his pillow!

I don’t particularly like the first ad. Any connection of periods to an injury is a turn off to me. No, they aren’t fun, and yes, they can be painful and as annoying as an injury, but I think connecting them to actual injuries in any way supports the view in society that periods are a debilitating negative (and even an indication of weakness) instead of the normal, life-giving, powerful process they are. I don’t know if I’m explaining myself well, but it just seems like another negative slam.

I do like the message of perseverance. But, there is a time for rest, too…

IMO, the point of the first ad is that tough women bleed and it’s no big deal. I too hate hate hate boxing but I think the ad is nevertheless a refreshing difference from all the pink flowery crap we’ve always seen. I also think the other commercials are a hoot – humor regarding a period is certainly something new for me!

I remember, back in the day when we still wore sanitary belts and pads, seeing my older sister – not yet dressed – wearing one. I quickly turned my back. It was as if seeing her with that contraption on was more intrusive that seeing her naked, about which we were quite blase. I remember wondering at the time why seeing her with that thing on was such a taboo, but it was.

But I’m older than most of you (just turned 68), and my sister is now 74. I’m thrilled that things have lightened up and come out of the dark to the point where we have these fabulous commercials and songs!
