DS graduates in 3 weeks and life is coming at him fast. He’s moving into his apartment and has to finally deal with grown up issues…like…paying for the internet and …paying to watch TV. Now that he has to pay for it, vs. it being free in his university owned apartment, he’s decided he only watches the sports channels and isn’t paying $50 a month for that. I told him, he has to have Internet though. That runs $20/month and he can have our old wireless router. Another life lessen…oh, the wireless stuff just doesn’t magically happen?? He lucky we have one.
He can use our Netflix account, so he has that.
What other ways could he watch TV? Do indoor antennas really work?
I don’t have cable. I have an Amazon Prime subscription (soon to be ended), and my roommate lets me use her Netflix account. If anyone in my apartment wants to watch a game we usually stream it.
That’s a great idea! I just looked and it’s $99 a year. So, does it stream live Sports, when you say “game”? Excuse my ignorance, but can you stream on the TV and not just the PC?
Cable and internet, $139/month, that’s without renting any movies, the necessary modem and taxes. If I had my way, we’d do without as well LOL. For the most part, we only watch football and movies.
We connect one of our laptops to the TV and go from there. For most computers and TVs, a simple HDMI cord works well. Since I’m not a football fan, I’m not exactly sure how my roommates stream the games.
My on their own kids use Netflix. If there is some sporting event they want to watch they go to a bar. They also have Amazon Prime and stream that way too.
Yes, mine have web access, then Prime, Netflix, Hulu. One has Roku. They shared my Netflix in the past. I’ve used one’s Hulu. No sports games and they read the news, not watch it. Much more expensive is the cell plan.
I once considered Slingbox (allows steaming from your home tv to devices away from home). If you have a second cable-connected tv (that you don"t regularly use), your son could, in essence, take over control of that tv remotely. I never tried it, but you may want to look it up to see if it might fit your son’s circumstances.
When my daughter got her own apartment the only way to get good internet (decent speed) was to get the bundle with TV - so she has cable TV. She hardly ever watches it - is more likely to watch an amazon prime or DVD on her laptop and connect it to the TV with an HDML cable. You should check what internet packages are available for his area.
No cable for my kids. Like the others above they use Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. D also has an antenna on her wall which lets her pick up about 20 local tv channels. She does pay for internet.
No cable for my older S (out of college). Netflix, then Hulo, now Amazon Prime. Actually none of my adult friends could afford cable out of college. That was something you get once you have a good paying job with a bit $ leftover after paying necessities (like rent). Also my older S could not afford internet for many years when he was interning and had to use his phone data plan (so no movies or video). He would download movies to his laptop when he was on internet at friend’s or a cafe and watch later.
Do you guys have cable in your own house? What I do is just download all the TV apps (NBC, Fox, CW, ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, etc) and then sign in with my family Optimum account for full access. Then I can watch whatever show I want, and even live TV. I got a chromecast for thirty bucks so it’ll cast to my TV monitor and it works perfectly.
