What does 6000 characters or less including the spaces mean?

My supplements for a college requires an essay of 6000 characters or less including spaces. I’m confused on what the college mean by spaces and characters… Could someone help me figure out what the WORD limit that the college is looking for? Thanks in advance!

A character is a language symbol. Each letter is a character, as are the various punctuation marks and other special symbols. Spaces are sometimes counted (they are in this case).

By spaces, they mean the spaces in between words. A character is each symbol you type. Each letter, number, symbol (like these: !?%#@), and space all count as one character. If you’re typing in MS Word, you can see the character count by clicking on the word count in the bottom left corner.
