Hey guys just wondering if anyone is majoring in International Relations, and if so if they could share what their schedules look like, i’m more interested in the specific classes rather than out of class activities.
You should look at your school’s IR department webpage for degree requirements; some schools have more structured programs whereas other schools allow for more variety. For a particularly large school, there may not be a “typical” schedule because of how many different courses are offered for each requirement.
One of my roommates is an IR major. Her schedule has been pretty flexible; there’s only a few strictly required classes, and all others are a case of “choose (whatever number of classes) out of this list of classes”. At my school there are four tracks for IR: World trade/development, peace and security, global environment/health, and people and nationalities. The last one is required to study abroad, while I believe the others have the option of exempting a class or two if they study abroad. All tracks need to pick a region concentration (Asia, Western Europe, Africa, Latin America, Russia/Eastern Europe). I don’t know details beyond that, and I only know this much because I remember my roommate trying to decide on her track and region concentration last year, haha.
Of course, look into the program at your school (or whatever schools you’re considering). It will vary depending on the school. Even better, get in contact with a current IR major at any schools of interest and talk to them about the program.
At my school we take classes that focus on globalization, conflict resolution, and environmental policies, and then we also have to take foreign language classes. After that, the majority of our classes are in a chosen concentration. I’ve picked Europe, so I will mostly just have to learn about the history and geography of Europe.
But like others have said: go to your school’s website and look at their specific requirements.
Thanks for the input, but i’m looking more for what the actual classes are that people are taking, like what the subject content is and what type of class it is. Sorry for the confusion!
What school?
I’m aiming for Gtown, but I would like to hear from anyone
Go to the IR department page for particular colleges and see what the typical curriculum is.
