What does an EFC of 1400 entail?

???

That’s the amount you’ll be forking over.

Maybe even more depending on your school.

Welll, it will entail you forking over a H**l of a lot less than I will for college, even after scholarships. :-(

It depends entirely upon the financial track record of the college. If the college meets 100%, expect to come up with $1400 per year. It not, expect to pay more.

It means that you expected family contribution is $1400. Question is how are colleges will treat this number depends on the colleges themselves and how is arttractive you are to them. Check out FA numbers from collegeboard.com or USnews.com.
Most colleges do GAP which means you full need won’t be covered. Some will cover your need with 50% loans and 50% grants, some may give all your need in loans.
Only few very elite/ richly endowed colleges have grants to cover your full need.
Make sure you have applied to enough schools to compare your packaging and at least one of them is financially feasible.
