<p>scarletleavy is correct. Its a military acronym for someone not being there without leave. ie if someone had “leave” (vacation time usually) they would be excused from roll call, but some Absent Without Leave (AWOL) would be in trouble somehow. It all depends on how the Commanding Officer is feeling that day usually. 
AWOL can be charged up to a courts martial, which is very serious.</p>
