What does "have a resume to hand out at colleges" mean?

We’re going to be visiting some colleges soon. We are looking at larger, public universities where my impression is that extracurricular activities aren’t as important and that the emphasis is put on GPA/SAT. This is a shame for my son because he has some strong extracurricular stuff.

As I’m reading about visiting colleges, I keep seeing references to putting together a “college resume” that you can hand to people you meet. Do people actually do this? And who would you hand them to if you’re not interviewing with someone? Do you try to meet someone while you are visiting a college? What would a “college resume” look like exactly?

Sorry if these are basic questions…and thanks in advance for your help!

The only time my S used a resume was when he was interviewing. I don’t see any reason to hand them out “randomly.” As for meeting people when you are visiting, if your son has a very specific interest, let’s say in the sciences, he might try to email a professor beforehand to see if the professor might have a few minutes to speak with him during the visit. The purpose would be for your son to glean some more information about the specific department. However, for a large, public university I’m not sure how often this would be done.

A college resume would state the basics. GPA/SAT/ACTS scores, courses currently being taken, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, jobs held etc. As I said, my son used this in an interview setting as a way to allow the interviewer to come up with more “talking points.”
