OK, current male students. Son will be a freshman at Michigan next fall. I know that there are hundreds of discussions regarding what Freshmen need. But they are all from a Mother’s point of view. And I’ve sent a daughter to college, but somehow I don’t think Son wants Pledge wipes and hand sanitizer, two of my daughter’s requests.

He has a mini-fridge, a computer, three nerf/super soakers guns, and 12 new pairs of sox. Besides XL sheets and a dozen pairs of underware (to cut down on laundry), what does suggestions do you have?

If you use an electric razor, do you shave in the bathroom or in the dorm room? Does he need a cordless?

Also, when he does decide to do laundry, do the machines take quarters or do you use a swipe card?

Being an Engineers Freshman, I assume he’ll end up in North Campus.

Lots of deodorant and shaving cream. Some boys get so caught up in life and “busy” that they “don’t have time” to buy these things and go days without them. It happens in college.

He won’t necessarily end up on north campus. Most engineering freshman have almost all of their classes on central campus. He should bring the items he uses day-to-day. I recommend he keep track of the things he uses in a typical school day, then bring those. For anything else, he should consider how much he’s used it in the last two months or so. If he hasn’t used it much in the past, he probably won’t be using it much in college. Space is at a premium in the dorms, and overpacking for college is almost guaranteed. I’d advise against the nerf guns as well, college is a different place.
