What does it mean if I have a low GPA, but perfect SAT score?

I have a 3.6 GPA UW, and a 4.9 weighted. This puts me at 55/912 in my class.
However I got a 2400 on my SAT.

Hmmm… brilliant but lazy, which includes the “I’m so good at the tests, I don’t need to do the busywork” set… or health problems or family problems during school… or you had trouble adjusting in your first year or two… or your school’s curriculum is insanely challenging, or you’re taking on more coursework than you can manage at once…

Could mean a lot of things. If you mean, what will the adcoms think… it’s kind of up to you to explain that to them.

A 4.9 GPA only gets you 55/912? O_o

Seriously, that can mean that you’re lazy, don’t do the work, or cheat on the test. But only you know for sure. I trust that you didn’t cheat or anything like that. The most likely explanation is that you take an overloaded schedule, have trouble with papers and labs, have something at home that eats up your time, or are more devoted to an extracurricular activity. If any of those apply, be sure to mention it either in your essay or the box underneath that for ‘anything else you would like the selection committee to consider.’

One thing to add… given your GPAs (3.6 UW, 4.9 W) and your 6th %ile class rank, it probably also means that you’ll knock the “most rigorous/challenging curriculum” criterion out of the park. Maybe you’ve just taken too many AP courses to be able to devote enough attention to all of them at once. As long as you’re not pulling Cs in them and you’re scoring well on the AP tests, I doubt it’s going to kill your application.

I would just make sure you emphasize your work ethic in whatever way you can, so you don’t get tagged “brilliant but lazy” – a definite application killer, as it doesn’t bode well for success in college.
