What does it mean when . . .

Someone is a ________ scholar? An example might be a “Rhodes Scholar”. I know it has something to do with scholarships but don’t exactly understand what they are.

Rhodes scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship granted to undergrads, gives a year of study at Oxford, and basically makes you da man in terms of academics - its based on just all around excellence in academics, research, high performance in every area of life.

Most top schools average about one Rhodes scholar a year, elite schools have more than one a year. However, you have really got to own everything. As in, being “…a double major in electrical engineering and physics, and recieved one grade below an A+, which was an A” - taken from one of the Rhodes scholars profile.

Theres the Marshall and Truman scholarships, geared towards public service. The Urdal which is for environmental. Theres a Putnam fellowship often in the news but I think thats regarding a mathematics competition and not really a scholarship.

Of course I think someone else could better answer this.

So they basically give someone a chance to study at a prestigious university? Is there a master list of these scholar things somewhere on the Internet?

Rhodes scholarships are for graduate courses, not undergrads.

cupcake, i meant they are given to undergrads for grad study
