What does "P/N permitted" mean?

The webpage for Northwestern’s Art Theory and Practice undergraduate major lists courses available, and some are “P/N permitted.” I was wondering what this meant by that.

"AT&P enrolls about 80 undergraduate art majors, while approximately 1,000 non-majors take our classes every year…Painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography form the core of the undergraduate curriculum… " [Art Theory and Practice](http://www.art.northwestern.edu/programs/undergrad/courses.html)

It goes on to say that classes fill up at the start of every quarter, but some people drop so you can try to get in. Between all this, “P/N” business, other non-majors taking classes, etc. what are the odds of a journalism major being able to take a photography class? (On that note, are there any photojournalism classes that journalism majors can get into with relative ease?)

Pass/ No Pass. Yes there are photojournalism classes.

And there are very, very, few instances where its both allowed to and worth it to take a class P/N. Either a senior with a job who wants to slack off or someone who really wants to take an extra class that they are interested in that doesn’t count for any distro and doesn’t want to have to deal with GPA pressures.

ah that makes sense. thank you!
