What does "rank omitted" mean?

I was just curious to know what this means. Is it bad for college applications? I heard some schools don’t even rank so will it be a major problem?

Lots of schools don’t rank. Are you seeing this on an official transcript? Neither of my kids’ schools rank, but I don’t know what was on the official transcript… might have said “rank omitted”. Does your school rank?

@phoenixmomof2 The school I’m transferring to ranks but since I’m moving in 12th grade, I will not have a rank. I just don’t know if it will cause me issues.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Since a lot of schools don’t rank at all, you won’t be the only one.

Thank you @phoenixmomof2

Second that. Our high school does not rank. Just put n/a (not available or not applicable) in the box if it allowed. Didn’t matter at all, just annoying not to be able to put it if it is in your favor.

@CADREAMIN I’m just really worried because all the other students will have ranks accept for me. I mean, I have a 3.98 UW GPA and a 4.3 W. Colleges might think that I am dumb or something.

It will be obvious to the admissions people with that GPA that you aren’t dumb. Also, they will see you transferred and understand you wouldn’t get ranked coming into 12th as you did. That is common knowledge, especially for an keen admissions eye. On that section of the common app where it asks if there is anything else to include, you could have noted this, but still, anyone would catch your circumstances - remember they are looking at the entire application. I understand why you think it could matter, we felt that way not being able to put a rank down, there is a discomfort about it - but that’s all it is. You really shouldn’t worry about it.

  • My D’s HS did not rank and we have asked this question on one of the info sessions with adcom. They said, that colleges determine rank based on the student GPA and HS profile which HS’s are obligated to provide. So, while HS does not explicitly rank, actually it still does as it provides 2 numeric facts that are needed to calculate a student rank - student HS GPA and HS class profile.

If your HS doesn’t rank, how would you know that your kiddo was number one in her class? The school Profile gives the range of GPAs in the class. It doesn’t say whether two or three or four kids share the top GPA.

Thanks for the replies.

I am a Texas resisdent and most Texas colleges want ranks so that’s why I’m freaking out. If I am in top 7% and my new high school next year doesn’t rank, than I will not get auto admit.

I think you should ask that the transcript notation be changed to something like “Not ranked due to transfer in to district.”

"If your HS doesn’t rank, how would you know that your kiddo was number one in her class? "

  • If this is addressed to me, then it was very easy in D’s case. The class profile was stating that only certain percentage had GPA=4.0. This percentage represented in numbers only 1 student. D. had HS GPA=4.0. Apparently, since she was the only one, then she was #1. Later it was proven to be true as she received the parents organization awards at graduation for both highest GPA overall and highest GPA in senior year.
"I am a Texas resisdent and most Texas colleges want ranks so that’s why I’m freaking out. If I am in top 7% and my new high school next year doesn’t rank, than I will not get auto admit. " - it will not happen, do not worry. Just do what we did - ask adcoms of all colleges that you are planning to apply.
Further, we were told, that colleges even ignore the weighted GPAs. Adcoms strip them down and recalculate them. It was our other concern since D’s HS did not provide weighted GPA’s and also on top of it allowed only 3 AP’s and only starting with junior year. That, clearly would put a student at disadvantage in comparison to graduates from other HSs who are coming with more than 6 APs. However, it was not a disadvantage at all as D. discovered very quickly at college, realizing that her HS was teaching regular classes at the higher level than others were taught in AP classes.
Believe me, adcoms know much more than just straight numbers.

Are you moving to a school in Texas which does not rank? The common practice in any high school is to follow their own process with any incoming student.

So if you have specific classes on your transcript, they will reinterpret them per their standard for additional weight to the class, GPA etc and provide a rank if they do that for everyone else.

I hope someone from Texas can clearly explain how auto admit goes for HS kids in Texas who attend HSs that don’t rank.

OP seems to say he will be the only one in his new hs who won’t get a rank, due to the transfer. Texaspg, would it help at all for the present GC to also send a note with the current rank? Or?

@texaspg. The school I’m changing to gives ranks but since I am transferring in 12th grade, the GC said that my rank would be omitted.

Yes I hope someone from Texas can explain the process for an unranked student.
