I see that Rice is mainly focused on people who are into their community, who volunteer and such. Is that it? I mean what if you had decent grades you’ve taken a few honors courses ( pre-ap’s ) and couple AP’s, can I still get in? With a outstanding EC, and such?

There’s no one specific thing that Rice wants. They want people who have shown that they’re smart (through grades, SAT scores, essay, any other way you can find to show it) and have shown involvement and dedication to something. That doesn’t necessarily have to be community service. In fact, community service is not always the best way to show commitment…community service seems like one of the easiest ways to pad a resume without doing that much actual work, and admissions councils will recognize it (not to put down anyone who has put a great amount of effort into volunteering, I know plenty of people who are incredibly devoted to whatever cause they’re volunteering for.).

I had no community service of any significance on my application (a few hours of NHS projects scattered about and a bi-weekly session at the Salvation Army food van) and still got in.
