What does the college you were accepted to actually mean?

Hey guys, I was accepted to the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern. However, Im not sure if I really want to do engineering. I am interested in journalism as well as communications (I’d especially like to get into radio). So, does my acceptance to McCormick eliminate me from these other programs or create any other problems if I do in fact decide I would not like pursue engineering?

The odds you succesfully transfer into Medill after getting to NU are very, very low. Other intra-school transfers are generally much easier. School of Communications particularly so.

I completely disagree. Four of my friends transferred into Medill, and actually one of those was from MEAS. A successful transfer into Medill after the first quarter typically requires substantial journalism experience to show that the student is serious about it. Transferring into Medill PRIOR to matriculation, however, is just a matter of phoning the office; in my Medill peer advising group at least two of the 14 students had been accepted to a different NU school and transferred to journalism during the summer before freshman year. It’s really not a rare occurrence or difficult process if you know journalism is what you want to do.

I should have been more careful with my wording: I meant after attending. And despite your anecdote, the rate is VERY low. Medill’s total enrollment is capped at ~200 to remain acredited, and so any transfers in must be replacing transfers out.
