What does the financial aid pre-read process look like?

The key here is for @Sportsball to be very transparent with the financial aid department about the NCP waiver question…and perhaps also with the coaches.

Coaches are the intermediaries between potential recruits and both the admissions and FA staffs. OP’s kid will need to tell each coach the situation, ask for a financial aid pre-read, explain the budget and need for NCP waiver, and let the coach take it from there. OP’s kid should only directly contact FA if the coach gives their permission.

Georgetown meets full need for all accepted students. They will need a NCP Profile waiver as the school requires the NCP profile.

Yes, but it’s important for OP to be aware that all meets-full-need schools are not the same. There can be significant differences among them and it’s not unusual to see tens of thousands of dollars difference in estimates of need.

For example, comparing the Georgetown NPC to that of a school like Princeton with a few hypothetical income levels, I see a difference of 20k to 30k per year.

for my daughter, after academic pre reads we asked for financial pre reads. these were all at CSS schools and we needed a non custodial parent waiver approved. all agreed to meetings via zoom or phone calls with financial aid. all but one school had anticipated merit awards listed in pre read results. financial aid gave us estimated aid amounts, but would not guarentee an amount. accepted an offer, applied ED, given results with financial aid award within 1 month of applying (significantly earlier then published dates). FA award package was greater then initial estimated amounts. went back and asked for additional aid, that was granted. ended up with a package about 20,000 better then initial estimated amounts

Assets can also be defined differently.

Some areas of difficulty when schools assess the need for financial aid are closely held businesses, farming income/farming business,and foreign held assets/foreign trust accounts. The main difficulty in these areas is asset valuation.
