I’m a junior and Yale sent me a letter today saying that I should apply because I “may be a good candidate for Yale,” which they evidently found out through the College Board. It was really long, and really encouraging.

What do these letters mean? How seriously should I take it?

It means that your PSATs/SATs are in a competitive range for Yale. It doesn’t mean that you will get in. If you like Yale, then apply! They’re telling you that your test scores put you in range for admission. Just don’t put too much stock in one letter…there are thousands of super-qualified applicants and only 1800 admitted students. Good luck!!!

It means that they know your scores and your grades (if you specified what they are on your PSAT) are in the range for admission to Yale. It’s just heartening to know that, should you apply, your scores will not be a limiting factor and that your essays, short answer and extracurriculars will be studied closely by the admissions officers.
