What does this mean?

“ECs are also what you make out of them.”

I have heard this quote so many times on CC and i still don’t get what people mean when they say this. I am the vice president of my school’s science olympiad team and the secretary of our math team. Is this not enough for colleges? What do they want me to say in my applications? I do a lot of stuff for both of the teams in which i am a leader. Should i write about all the new rules that i have made for the team? If so, Where do i write them? in the application itself? or do i mention it during an interview?

Thanks

Do you have a resume? I suggest you make one, find a nice layout online and write what you did in bullet points.

As far as ECs go…a lot depends on where you’re applying. Top, top schools are looking for unique or meaningful/leadership ECs/accomplishments that were done over a decent period of time.

Many state schools don’t really care much about ECs because they admit largely by stats or formula.

If you were the president of an inactive club, it wouldn’t be as impressive as what you’ve really done. So somehow you have to let the colleges know that this was a real position with real work involved. A resume, one of the writing sections in the common app, a letter of recommendation…
