I’m a high school sophomore involved in Orchestra and Debate. I am interested in doing IB next year, but I would have to quit one of the two ECs. I am good at orchestra, and have been doing it for the past 6 years. I have a good chance at All-State next year and definitely region orchestra. But I honestly do not like it. On the other side, this is my first year in debate, and I am loving it. However, I’m not as good at debate as I am orchestra. How would colleges view me quitting one of the two? Should I just do AP and keep both?
And if I was to quit one, which should I quit?
It depends on what type of college your interested in. Also, maybe just keep both and learn time management skills. Its totally possible to do even more ecs.
I’d quit orchestra. The fact that you’ve been doing it for the past six years speaks volumes, but if it’s not doing anything for you, a few honors aren’t going to mean much unless you plan on doing orchestra in college. You don’t need awards to show your dedication to it.
Maybe there’s also a possibility of dropping it for a year, seeing how you manage the IB workload, and then picking it back up. If you feel that both are important enough for you to keep and do AP, don’t feel bad about doing that either. It honestly depends on what you find important.
thanks!! @OnMyWay2013 @smileydinosaur
Are these courses or EC? I would keep both and see how it goes.
Don’t pick AP vs IB on the basis of ECs unless you really really love an EC.
Go for what you love-- debate. I’m doing the same thing with choir this year, although it’s sad that I’ve moved on from that chapter in my life, I’m really excited to go for the EC that I love.
thanks @lindsgal
Doesnt the IB diploma require you to do arts, sports, and community service for the CAS portion? Debate doesn’t fit into any of these categories. You may be able to manage 4 ECs with a full load of IBs, but it could be hard. If you really badly want to continue with debate, try to work out the logistics of how much school work you’ll have to be doing vs how much time the required ECs will take
