What EC's does SFS look for?

I obviously know SFS would probably like participation in Model UN, Speech, Debate…

the thing is i have none of those. What i DO have are major leadership roles in newspaper and music, volunteering, national merit semifinalist, as well as 2300 SAT, 770+ on 2 sat subjects, rank 12/735, 4.89 gpa… etc.

The test stats are there. I’m just not sure that my EC’s really speak for an international relations major. And since everyone’s test scores are essentially the same, I’m SURE greater emphasis will be placed on my extracurrics…

Will they understand I just had a late blooming desire for an international major?

I was accepted to SFS EA.
Let me tell you this - if Georgetown SFS accepted only students that participated in Model UN, they are going to have a crappy freshmen class. I’ve attended a few conferences, and the participants can be divided into a few categories: those who are extremely passionate and have been doing international Model UN conferences ever since they were 7 (5%), observant people who raise their hands a few times (20%), and the rest are horny teenagers - boys who like to make a ruckus and crack nasty jokes, and girls who like to wear short dresses and exchange phone numbers.

Don’t worry. SFS is looking for diversity. Your ECs and stats are surprising VERY similar to mine. It will be helpful if you are fluent in another language. I strongly suggest you talk about your curiosity in an international major in your essay. Don’t make excuses for why you didn’t have “international” ECs, but talk about why you are interested.

I know kids who have done Language clubs, study abroad in other countries, and have gotten rejected from Gtown. So it’s not about the ECs, its about the passion.

whoa i am also very similar in this scenario but i also dont have many ECs with model un or whatnot. i mean all i pretty much have related to foreign service is maybe a history/govt club at my school in which i am president, but i think its a little bit not enough?

There is no formula of ECs that can “guarantee” a college admission. For me, I thought my essays were the strongest point. My ECs were very weak compared to other applicants I know of (like on CC! lol). And they were very vague on the application. I liked Georgetown’s application because they only give you a small space to list your extra curriculars. They give you 2 pages to write essays. I wrote a very passionate international issue essay that linked to my two other essays. Don’t worry! Apply for it!

my belief with any kind of application is that institutions want talented individuals with strong passions and character. I don’t think it matters what your EC’s are as long as you show some interest in FS. I was accepted to SFS and my EC’s are not nearly as centered on IR as some people I know

Follow what you’re genuinely passionate about. I feel like Georgetown looks for authenticity first and foremost and I feel like you’ll be best positioned in the admissions process if your resume and essay reflect a underlying passion you’ve pursued in high school.
