i’ve taken it 3 times and never done anything besides just go in and take the test. can anybody give me some insight about what prepping can do to your score?

It can raise it but only to a certain extent and if you are willing to do it.

Well, it’s pretty obvious what it can do for your score…the better you understand the test itself and the material, the better you’ll do. You can’t just keep walking into the test center and expect automatic improvements.

I would strongly recommend getting the official ACT book and Princeton Review Cracking the ACT and going through both books completely before you take the ACT again. If you’re not seeing significant improvements in your scores, don’t take it again. A fourth attempt with no improvement doesn’t look very good.

definately helps on the reading and science. The main problem is the time limit, so prepping/practicing under time constraints will definately pay off come exam day

trans-siberian: my scores have gone 28-31-33. i really want at least a 34 and i was really close to it this time. i also was sorta wondering if prepping would help me get a shot at the big three-six.

With a 33 I personally would leave it alone and focus on the rest of your app. I really don’t think a 34 would sway the schools more than fabulous essays and a stellar GPA for difficult classes would. How is the rest of your app?

And honestly, it really is a crapshoot when you’re aiming for top schools. Our class valedictorian is disgustingly perfect in every way (acads, test scores, ECs (amazing, well-rounded ECs that I would hate him for if he weren’t a friend!!), recs, essays, EVERYTHING)…the perfect applicant. He was rejected by Harvard and Yale, in at Princeton.

It’s not worth taking a 4th time for 1 point, and at that score level, they’ll be wondering if you’re able to prioritize and understand what’s really important. It would also show a perfectionist streak, and that’s not usually a good thing.

Be happy with a killer 33 and focus on the rest of your app.

yeah that’s what i was thinking. the only reason i might retake is if my essay score isn’t that good.

well, since its the ACT, i say prep and then take it…u only have to report the scores u want the colleges to see, so if u want you can just send the highest grade (they wont see other test scores that u took earlier if u dont want them to) so taking it again would be good, esp. if u prepped a lil bit
