Okay, so today I spoke to my English teacher and Guidance Counselor about taking the AP English Lang & Comp exam with the AP Eng 11 class this May, even though I’m not in the AP class myself.

Self-study. It shows motivation, not to mention I need the score. It’s pretty common though, right? (And yet, apparently it has to be “approved” by a school board official first. Luckily, it’s one who I know, and he likes me, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem.)

So, I’m wondering…what else do I need to do to improve my chances at ED for W&M?

So far I have:

SATs (March 14)

ACT (June 13)

SAT Subject Tests (Literature and US History) (June 6)

Planning to schedule an interview for the summer as soon as Sign-up starts (May 1)

AP US History Exam (May 8)

AP English Exam (self-study) (May 13)

Planning more SAT Subject Tests for early next fall (Japanese and Chinese) (whenever they put up the sign-up option for them on collegeboard)

Planning on Information sessions & Campus tour so I can get all the information possible

Continuing and more EC’s
- (Founder and President) Asian Pacific Culture Club
- Creative Writing Club
- Former (3 years) Marching Band Colorguard (Last year Co-captain)
- Ecology Club (includes community service)
- Beta Club (community service of course)
- Summer Governor’s School Russian Academy (2008)

GPA : 4.0 UW (won’t have weight until end of this year)

Class Rank: 5 (last I checked)

Courses:

-Academic English (-cough- my mistake -cough-)
-Chemistry
-Pre-Calculus
-AP US History
-Japanese III (I’m teetering towards doom (B or…or…C ;-; ) on this one (for semester anyway)…I just need to survive my midterm with at least a C and get a B for semester…I still have the next 3 marking periods to redeem myself, I just lost it for some reason…I think I’m losing my magic language touch… >< It would kill me not to get an A for Final…)
-Chinese II

Okay, so, NO! This is not a chance thread.

This is an advice thread. What exactly am I lacking in? And don’t say AP’s, my school only offers 2 for Juniors.

What could I improve (besides my suffering Japanese grade that’s barely maintaining a 6 weeks A and is about to tumble downwards because of my sorry exam attempt)?

What else can I do to prepare me for the ED application in early Fall?

Anyway, come on guys. I need to know how college admissions looks at things…

EDIT:

WAIT! What?! What do you mean it needs to be higher? I specifically stated that is was UNWEIGHTED, and that weight would be added at the end of this year. How much higher can you possibly be thinking I can get without having been offered weighted classes prior to this year?

I don’t know how…where would I do that? I don’t know anything about AP classes except what they told us in school, which is basically nothing, and what I’ve heard on this board.

I didn’t even know you could self-study for them until I joined this forum. I feel so far out of the loop…

Can you take the ACT earlier than Jun & see how you do? If the scores are very high I would concentrate on ACT but if they are not so good in comparision to your SAT scores- I would focus on SATs esp. if you are taking the SATIIs. Or if your ACTs are good I think you can skip the SATIIs. It would be nice for you since you have all these other AP exams if you just focused on one or other.

It is definitely possible to do well if you study on the AP Lit exam.

I would recommend getting a job this summer or volunteering full time w/ handicapped children, hospital, etc. Colleges really respect that .

Yeah, I’m looking for more summer programs or just a job. I had a part time job summer of Sophomore year, but I want something with a bit more experience value than filing things in an attic at 105 degrees.

No, I’m doing all the tests. I’ve already registered, so changing would cost me. I want to do as much as it takes to show the colleges I’m applying to that I have what it takes, I don’t care if takes me 100+ hours of studying to do.

I WILL do well on ALL of them, the AP Exams, the SAT, SAT II’s, and ACT. No matter what. I’m determined!

@hmom5 - Thanks =3 If the school goes stupid on me (again) I’ll just use that option, but I don’t actually think it’ll be a problem.

Good luck on the tests. Advice from Xiggi- let preparing for a marathon race, you don’t train by running 27 miles- you do 5-7 often and as you get closer to the date add a few more. So for SATs prac a 1 section each day 2 months before test date. , 1 month before- 2 sections a day & you’ll be in tip top condition.
Skip the summer programs unless it fuels a passion to something you are already involved (keyword= passion). Looking at your ecs it look like something in Asian studies but if you are Asian it might be overkill. Get a Gritty job-- busing tables, pumping gas (not likely since your female), grocery store clerk, waitressing, scooping ice cream, guiding children w/ downs syndrome-- that’s impressive. Schools are looking for unglamorous, high achiever.

Any job I get will be low-end anyway. Like I said, my last job was filing old files in a dirty car dealership attic in the summer…it was well over 100 degrees and all my cuts got infected, and I went home looking like a chimney sweep everyday…

I just want something a little better than that…

No, I’m not Asian. xD American with full British ancestry: A combo of Welsh, English, and Scottish.
