What Employer?

I worked as a private tutor for three years, teaching a younger student in various math subjects. What do I list for employer?

Also, is a 2 page resume fine for schools like Yale, or is 1 page preferrable?

“Self-employed.”

Resumes are always supposed to be one page. Remove any unnecessary sections, IE hobbies. Make the font smaller if necessary.

(My answer stems from 1.5 years’ experience running my own business after graduating from HS.)

2-page resumes are OK these days. JUst make sure you have your name and pertinent contact info on both pages.

Oh, and don’t shrink the font too much. 11 pt is about as small as you want to go. Those of us who read resumes are usually getting up there in age…and we need all the help we can get. :)

I strongly suggest 1 page for a high schooler unless your achievements are world-class. If you’ve performed in a bunch of Broadway plays, go ahead and list them all as you would on a theatrical resume. But if we’re talking about clubs, sports, ordinary HS jobs…you’re probably not editing well if you can’t get to one page with 12-point font. The more secondary information you pile into it, the less likely it is that readers will notice the things that are important.

Remember to leave your academic information off a resume for college. You’re putting your GPA, rank, classes, standard academic honors (NHS, honor roll) on the application itself. Don’t be redundant. (You can keep the name of your high school for ID purposes, though.)
