I am a junior. I am looking at colleges over spring break and was wondering what schools would be a fit for what I am looking for.

I am looking for a school that:

I can be challenged at in a collaborative spirit
I can join a student lead/ organized engineering project
Has an intense focus on service
Fosters involvement within the school and surrounding community

In terms of majors:

I am looking at BME, ME, physics, applied math, chemistry
I would also like the school to have a strong undergraduate business program that focuses on entrepreneurship

Most of all, I really want a sense of community. I visited MIT last summer and feeling that the school was brilliant but lacked a sense of community, just from the general vibe of the campus, along with the information tour. The whole focus on “hacking” and the resulting lack of attention to living on campus alienated me a little bit.

Also, i have spent my whole life in school on the east coast and heard that the west coast’s atmosphere is different- little more laid back. is this true?

What’s your general opinion on this? What engineering school would recommend for a sense of community with a strong program.

You should definitely look at UMich-Ann Arbor. Not only do they have a fantastic business school, but they are also very focused on entrepreneurship. They also have an honors program called Engineering Global Leadership that includes service, entrepreneurship, study abroad, business, and engineering. There is also a brand new honors engineering program that focuses strictly on entrepreneurship. I think Michigan has everything you’re looking for. I am not a student there, so I can’t tell you how strong the sense of community is, but when I visited in February it seemed good, and the honors program itself definitely had a strong sense of community.

Your stats ?

Look at Ohio state, Penn State, University of Illinois-UC, University of Wisconsin-Madison, SUNY buffalo, University of Maryland for engineering.

Have a 4.0 at college preparatory school. Taken 4 APs
5 Calc AB, 5 Chem, 5 World, 4 English Lang. Sat Super: 710 Reading, 700 Math, 780 Writing. Looking to prep and bring the Math up. 800 Chem and 790 Math II
Taking more APs this year. Going to retake Sat to bring math up around 740-760

Have you considered Rose-Hulman? It’s not one of the most famous engineering schools, but it has a remarkable reputation among employers and graduate schools for its quality programs and challenging atmosphere. It also has all of the science programs you’re looking for, as well as a developing minor in entrepreneurship. From what I know (my friend was not as involved in this aspect of the school), Rose also emphasizes service and community applications of engineering, and its small size fosters a strong sense of togetherness among its students. Plus, with your stats, you might qualify for some decent merit aid.

Price limit? State of residency? Financial aid situation?

If you have not done so already, you need to evaluate the above; talk to your parents and run the net price calculators on various schools’ web sites.

Ah, another Starfleet Academy branch campus discussion :)

Just kidding, my boss’s boss and a few people I work with daily are from Rose and they’re just amazing engineers. Rose does indeed have an amazing reputation in industry.

Other similar places (I’m looking for my younger daughter along similar lines) are Case Western and Tulane. If you have a ton of cash handy, Notre Dame, or even Rice.
