What every parent wants to hear...

Just talked to dear son who will fly home in 2 weeks for the summer and I said how much we were looking forward to having him home. He responded that there were many things he knew he’d enjoy about being home, but that he was already starting to look forward to coming back to campus. I was pretty sure he was loving it, but hearing that he was loving it this much just warmed my heart.

Sorry. As soon as I hit post I realized how much that was a punk thing to say. Yayy for your awesome kid. My fam is going to be the #1 thing I miss when I leave.

Bethie- yep, I’m with you. S just told us he is sad to see the end of freshman year, it was so much fun.

Well, my son is already home and I’m absolutely certain he is missing his dorm! (insert winking smiley face here.)

what this parent wants to hear----

I am graduating on time and I found a great job!

I just like to hear “thanks”!

People at my school put it as “Freshmen get homesick the first few weeks of college. They get collegesick the first few days of summer.”

I guess I’m translating his happiness into, “Thanks for allowing me to be at this great place!” As we were helping him with his college search, I always felt that the best social fit would also help him academically, because he’s basically a nice, nerdy kid and I thought he’d thrive surrounded by other nice nerdy kids. So far, so good!

bethie: Those are the words all of us first-timers of nice, nerdy kids dream we’ll be hearing next year this time! It WAS the right place after all. Until then, it all feels like a huge, terrifying leap of faith.

Bullet came home his freshman and soph summers (thank g*d he did or we would have never met), but after his sop summer he never came home again. I expect that from our DS also, in its own way it is proof that we as parents raised them right…they were confident enough to clip their wings and fly the nest.

I on the other hand still had all of my best friends at home (they stayed IS, I went OOS) so I loved coming home and hanging with them all over again! It had nothing to do with clipping my wings, and everything to do with friends. I actually probably saw my mom less, since we both worked, I would come home, eat dinner and be gone to midnight out with my friends!

I’m thinking that’s what will make a return to campus even sweeter. Dear son really tried to find like-minded people in HS, but there just weren’t many. On his campus he is surrounded by really interesting, unconventional thinkers. It’s lousy with nerds!

I have high hopes that your daughter will be having similar sentiments at this time next year. Of course, she has siblings, so home may offer a different kind of interest.

Cards4life, that’s so true!
