I don’t know if I should check off “Extensive community service involvement or volunteer experience” or “Student who has demonstrated academic excellence as well as leadership in extracurricular activities.” I’m not sure if it’ll have a significant impact on my chances for scholarships either.

I volunteered at a library for 80 hrs and a daycare center for 68 hrs. I have a 3.81 UC/CSU GPA and 3.64 Unweighted. I also currently have two 2 leadership roles. Can I still qualify for those two descriptions of me?

I wouldn’t consider that amount of hours extensive- perhaps if you had over 1000.

I have over 400 hours and that’s still not “extensive.” That’s just from junior year plus the three months of senior year, I did only 3 hours of service in freshman + sophomore year.

my oldest had over 2000 hrs from one volunteer position, but she started when she was 12 ( we also didn’t have to keep track- it was at the local zoo & they kept track of volunteer hours for funding purposes)

The quality of the service also makes a difference. If you just go to a hospital and do filing papers, it is of less meaningful than if you goto an adult school teaching pottery making, aerobics and others. Or go to an deprived area and teach young kids English or be a “big Brother/sister”.

If you are creative, a small amount of time could make up 1000’s of hours of community service time. Make some thing useful and meaningful for certain people and it will shine.

For example, my dd hand made blankets and donated to the early born infant ward in a hospital, we received thank you letters all over the place and had pphotos of those products. It made the portfolio shine and meaningful.

Thanks everyone! :)
