What exactly is tang scholar?

I googled and searched on Andover’s website. Did not really find anything super useful. Tom, Watertester? I know both of you got this distinction, what did the letter entail?

I am 90% sure that it is to a foreign student that gets accepted to Andover that is applying to FA.

Cool thanks.

Where do you plan on going, btw?

I don’t think that’s it. Watertesters daughter got it…I don’t think thats what it is. I believe it’s very selective.

The Tang scholarship is named after Oscar Tang, the president of the board of Trustees at Andover. He donated 25 million dollars to the school to help need blind admissions.

He developed the scholarship in '03 though.

I read the biography on the guy and he made a big deal that his family escaped the communist take over of Shanghai. That is what I assumed… It sort of seemed logical. HE started an investment firm and it has all been uphill from there. Yale and Harvard Business School grad also.

IDK. My best guess. I think that I have settled on Andover/Hotchkiss. My parents still want me to go to the least stressful school(Kent). IT’ll be a tough decision. I think that Kent is pretty down the ladder, but I still liked it. Plus my class rank would be pretty good and my parents said that the class rank really helps with college admissions.

Focus on the now, italianboarder. Cross the college bridge when you come to it - and anyway, Kent won’t be your best preparation for college. If I were you, I wouldn’t choose Kent purely based on the fact that your class rank would be higher. What you’re talking about is going to a school that is a lot lower-achieving than you are personally. I would choose Andover or Hotchkiss because it will be a true challenge, and you’re more likely to grow from being challenged.

As for the Tang Scholarship, it’s not just for foreign students. The letter that came with the scholarship described it as one given to ten out of the over 2,000 financial aid applicants to the students who have consistently proven their motivation and desire to improve themselves through academics. To be honest, I was a little surprised that I got selected. First of all, I didn’t even know that such a scholarship existed, and secondly I was very shocked that there was no one who deserved the scholarship more than I did…

Does anyone remember Tang the drink? That stuff was awesome.

haha, i remember that!!
do they still sell it?
(i remember looking at the monkey on the stuff and thinking that it looked really funny).

About class rank, too…at Choate, we don’t even do class rank. I don’t know if Kent/Andover/Hotchkiss do. And you shouldn’t choose Kent based on that… go to revisits and then see.

I liked Kent and it was one of the top campuses that I felt I “meshed” with. I’m not just picking Kent based on class rank. My parents love the college propects and they get to make my decision. This is not my decision, it is my parents money and it’ll go where they want it to.

I’m hoping Andover can offer the FA that my parents really hoped for.(No other school has discussed how much… they have only mentioned that FA will be discussed)

mpicz, there may be something true in your post and thanks for revealing that truth. BUT, are you a guy or a girl? if you are girl, you are very funny boy; if you are a boy, then you are a very witty girl. (understandably you have too much going on in your head at this moment :))

Ya I’m confuses. O God I don’t think I’m ready!!! But ya I’m a boy…so I guess I’m a witty girl.

@italianboarder

how did you like kent? i kinda want to apply there next year. mostly for the horse program :)

Last year, Andover acceptance and FA came in the same envelope. Andover was very generous to our family…gave more than the PFS predicted, while two other schools were pretty much in line with what the formula said.

Other factors: Kent and Hotchkiss are in smaller, more rural towns. Andover is in a suburban town, with a quck 30 minute train ride to Boston. Not saying one or the other is better, but some people like the more small-town atmosphere, others like the idea of being closer to a city.

And if the FA awards from several schools are reasonably close, I would hope that parents would let the student have a good say in where he/she will be spending the next few years. That is my adult perspective anyway.

I got the Partridge Scholarship at Kent… If Scholarship means full ride, I will have to pick Kent(I know in some cases it does… Sadly no info online and not alot of info in the acceptance letter about this scholarship).

Does anyone know anything about the Partridge Scholarship? Coach Bob Partridge coached soccer back in the day at Kent and that is all I know…

I believe that the Partridge Scholarship is given for recognition of being an outstanding well-rounded student. The Scholarship, I believe, is for $15,000/year. That is what they gave a friend of mine.

Little known fact: Neil Armstrong was a Tang Scholar.

Agree - the boarding school and future college student should be able to have an intelligent conversation with the parents regarding the pros and cons of attending each school, and the ultimate FIT of the student to the school. This is just as important as the prestige and even the cost, within reason. One usually accomplishes higher ground when they are involved in the decision process and comfortable with the school. Your opinion counts!
