This is an excellent information sheet from NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Note that they also have a help line - (800) 950-6264. It is staffed Monday through Friday, 10 am - 6 pm, Eastern time.

ML, thank you for posting that link. I wish I had seen it when my now 23 year old son was 14 and insisted on a psych eval. It doesn’t get any easier as they get older, that’s for sure. Very good information.

Thanks again for continuing to bring this topic to the forefront.

Just curious… in your NAMI meetings, has anyone ever mentioned TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) as a treatment for certain psychiatric conditions (and some neurological conditions as well)? Most of the information I find is marketed by the manufacturer of the technology and I would love to hear stories from people who have considered it and/or tried it.

teriwtt, the son of a friend of mine (early twenties), who left college when his depression became overwhelming, was referred by his therapist to a local clinic for TMS treatment. He is doing better, but his mother is not sure how much of the improvement is attributable to the treatment and how much to the passage of time and increasing maturity. PM me if you’d like the name of the clinic.

Excellent list. Some mental illnesses are quite common and appear for the first time around college age. And yet, when a mental illness post appears, it typically vanishes after a handful of replies. I realize we’re not doctors, but we could be a lot more supportive of each other.

MaineLongHorn,
I admire your willingness to reach out to people who are suffering. There are still so many stigmas attached to mental illness and some reluctance, for many people, to reach out and get help. Even those who are willing often find that help hard to locate.
