The bigger conveniently located beach rental for the long weekend with Ss and their gfs. I agonized over spending on it this year - it’s a significant chunk of $$$ for us - but it worked out so well (big gathering room, separate bedrooms/bathrooms for each couple, two blocks from the beach, quick bike to restaurants) I’ve already booked it for next year! YOLO and I don’t need more stuff.
Part of our travel splurging last year was taking our avid Broncos fan kids to the international game in London. My husband also loves football, but for me I was there totally for the family experience. The good news is ticket prices were more reasonable than US, so we had fabulous seats.
Our splurges include travel, theater, golf, and nice restaurants on special occasions.
A few months ago, I splurged on a pre-owned designer tote from their 2019 collection. It turned out to be a conversation piece!
I now carry it as much as possible to get a good mileage out of it. My husband is itching to buy a car with adaptive headlights that turn in the direction the car is moving. My research shows that it is not going to be a cheap car ![]()
Right now it’s a party cake!!!
. Lol getting a 10 inch 3 layer cake for a party I’m hosting next week and the price…… nearly $150!!! lol I could have had the bakery down the street do a two layer 12inch for less than half but this is a special party and I wanted a more modern special cake rather than just a cake with writing and roses.
I’ve half a mind to sequester a few pieces in my closet for post party when everyone has left! ![]()
My Volvo has adaptive headlights. I really like the feature. Volvo S60 2024.
That cake price takes the cake! Mind blowing
how much cakes can cost! Big kid wanted a fancy cake for her birthday. She sent her keto dieting husband to pick one up at the fancy bakery… he saw the prices
and got the smallest one they had! Probably 3 inches in diameter. Since he doesn’t eat sweets, he had no idea how many people that cake would feed -
! So on the way to their house, I swung by the local very fancy grocery store and got a bigger one for her. She said the grocery store one tasted better!
I give everyone a pass on cake splurge if it’s all chocolate.
We just bought a peach bavarian 1/4 sheet cake with lettering & border. It’s 2 layers of chiffon plus a heavenly peach frosting for a wedding shower. It was $60+ and tax. It’s for a double-wedding shower for two nieces-in-law marrying our nephews in Oct.
The cake is a HI concoction and light and yummy—not too sweet.
For favors, I bought Belgian dark chocolates (individually wrapped from Costco). Just bought nice tulle bags to put them in so they look fancier and that way don’t have to wrap them more–white since weddings.
May buy some nice runners to decorate the table–not sure.
Horseback riding lessons. It was my dream as a kid but my parents couldn’t afford it. Now that one kid is out of college and the other is halfway through, I also needed a hobby. DH and I signed up for lessons together and are loving it.
I’ll take half a pass please, the cake wilL be one layer chocolate, one layer vanilla with a chocolate mousse filling - vanilla Frosted cause polka dots and pictures! ![]()
I don’t even want to tell you what this cake cost! But it was fabulous both in looks and taste (crossed out their names on the ribbon banner for privacy). And it was all edible except under the champagne bottle fondant.
Every summer I rent a beach house for the whole bunch of us for a week. Three sons/wives and now 5 grandkids. It’s worth every penny.
I use Express Lanes. Period. No matter how much it costs. We worked hard and we deserve it. And it’s worth it.
We fell in love with the cakes at Bakery Nouveau and that’s all she wrote.
Well candidly, the cake I ordered is not intended to be that “deluxe” or over the top.
A floating toy and a place to keep it. Very out of character for us but it’s been great.
Business class if it’s a long flight. Once I tried it I couldn’t go back.
Yes, since H has had business class for longer flights, he’s quite smitten with it as well and S is happy to book it for us.
That sounds well worth it!
A friend’s father+gf have a beach condo. Every December my friend, his brother, the father+gf go to the beach with the sons’ gfs/wives/kids for a week. He always has great stories about that family tradition. I’ve been jealous of their annual getaway bonding for 40 years! ![]()
Ours was a double special occasion. Was worth every penny. It was a spectacular centerpiece and dessert. We were celebrating the birth of our first grandchild and the engagement of our younger son. It was a wonderful splurge, and the absolute PERFECT cake for the occasion. There have been some incredible specialty cakes made by local bakers. We also had one made in the shape of an old record player.
I like to think I am frugal but think I also will splurge on things/experiences that we will love.
Toto toilets. As Andre Tobias wrote, " A luxury once sampled becomes a necessity."
Lots of trips (often done frugally). Shortly after 9/11, flights were incredibly cheap and I booked tickets to Japan for two weeks in March for the school vacation. Another year, I used FF miles for a trip to Hong Kong and Bali for a trip when the kids were still kids. A long weekend in Paris for ShawWife’s birthday-- used points for flights and the Prince de Galle hotel. Had a huge flower arrangement waiting for her in the room. Stayed in several Conrad hotels in our trip in the spring to Japan/Korea.
Nice new cars – we replace 13 and 14 yo cars this year. Got cars we love to drive.
Just replaced a lot of my travel tech. Did not need to but makes my trips a lot easier. JBL headphone. Momax travel charger/adapters, etc.
Put suspender buttons into several of my suits.
I don’t consider this a luxury but was able to fully fund our kids’ educations. Pleased that they can do what they need to do including start their own businesses without having to carry debt.
