What fun/special or even unnecessary something did you splurge on

Other than college tuition, what something did you ever splurge on, just because. It can be a big splurge or a not-so-big splurge, but something you might not ordinarily have done. Was it worth it?

My DH has a significant birthday next year, and we are taking the whole family on a trip, and splurging on the accommodations. Way more than I expected to spend, but its all good. It should be fun. Others??

We don’t travel abroad very often so a five week trip to Australia and New Zealand was a splurge for us.

We have also gone out to a very nice restaurant for Thanksgiving the last two years…and it was quite a splurge dinner out. But was so nice (no family around for making thanksgiving dinner).

We went to Zion, and stayed at the lodge, having saved up so I wouldn’t worry about the money.

That being said, we spend too much money on books!

My son moved to Baltimore earlier this year. I’ve visited him several times since then. A couple of months ago, I bought two second-row tickets to see J. Cole. It was a great show and we had a great time together.

I took him to his first concert when he was 7 or 8. It was Orrin Evans, a Jazz musician. Since then, we’ve probably been to 30 or more concerts, plays, and comedy shows. But nothing beat taking him to see his favorite performer, sitting up close, and having a great time together.

Making it an even better experience was the guy beside me was ex-military living in DC, whose wife kept their two small children and sent him out with her blessings to watch his favorite rapper. The guy was about 30 and had never been to a concert in his life. He said he had a bit of social anxiety, but he did not want to let it keep him from seeing J. Cole. I did my best to make him feel comfortable and get excited about the show. Dude rapped every single lyric for the entire show. I think he had the time of his life. My son said seeing that stranger enjoy the show so much made him enjoy it even more.

My fancy Japanese toilet. Unnecessary, but boy do we love it.

Our whole house standby generator. Our kids also appreciate, as they have crashed at our house when their electricity was out.

In 1986, I spent $600 on a black velvet gown to wear to a “society” New Year’s party. It was stunning, and I felt fabulous in it. I still have it. (It cost more than my wedding dress.)

I can’t think of anything fun/unnecessary I’ve splurged on since as spending money unnecessarily is something I don’t enjoy and try to avoid. DH on the other hand…

We have been splurging on vacations/lodging lately. We like more space than a regular hotel room, and we often try to get a 1 BR place instead of just a room. We are in Santa Barbara right now, and decided to stay in the 1 BR oceanfront suite, instead of a smaller room. We went to the Canadian Rockies in July and we stayed at Moraine Lake Lodge. I’m actually getting better at not buying so much, but buying potentially better/nicer things when I do buy. And, we are willing to pay for convenience.

I guess it would have to be our vacations - Yosemite for me last summer, coastal southern California in the fall, and New Zealand/Australia in February. But we don’t think of it as splurging - just part of how we choose to use our income. And I know that’s tons less traveling than lots of you do!

I splurge on first class when I fly to visit son but that’s once a year.

We splurge on restaurants but they still aren’t the ones at the top of the bracket. We don’t buy new cars or high end clothes so food is our luxury spend. I still remember our first $100 meal - it was at Lutece in NYC.

We’ve been splurging on business class travel when we go on trips. Most recently, we went from here to NYC, to Scandinavia and Tokyo. It was business class all the way! We had a great time. We also splurged by having my H get a brand new Lexus—1st new car he’s had in the over 40 years we’ve been together. He’s fond of his new car! (He was going to get a Camry but I persuaded him to get the car that would make him more comfortable and we’re both enjoying it, especially the cooling seats.)

I am not a big spender by any stretch. I agonize over most big purchases.

We do like to travel, and I am usually convinced to spend more on lodging. Last year we paid for a villa in Provence for 2 weeks and the kids + SIL and BF joined us. Best trip ever.

My husband has no problem splurging, hence the car and watches he’s bought.

My last splurge for myself was a trip in 2024 with my sisters to Austrian and German Christmas markets & I covered some of the lodging & dining costs so we were able to enjoy ourselves w/o anyone worrying about spending.

@greenbutton -there is no such thing as spending too much on books! They are a necessity

I’ve been using the library a lot more! Honest! Packing up estates made for a conversion experience of sorts, lol.

I have continued to even though I could easily retire. DH and I are in agreement that every cent I earn can be spent frivolously. Here’s what I’m splurging on most

  1. businesses class travel
  2. renting an apartment in the city so the commute to work is easy
  3. very expensive restaurants once every other month
  4. my daughters very luxe wedding.

Once I get the nerve to travel without a partner, I’ll splurge on travel

Today I am buying a new tv for living room.

Honestly, the most $ I’ve ever spent was helping with the down payment of son’s and DIL’s house. They had a chance to get a 2.25 mortgage. (For the record, they offered to pay me back.)

When H and I got engaged he gave me a diamond solitaire ring and said we would pick out a setting for it together so I could pick what I wanted. I wanted to have it set somehow with emeralds in the setting. The jeweler we used talked me out of that because he said they were too soft and wouldn’t wear well. A few years ago I decided I wanted to have it reset and a local jeweler designed a lovely setting with bezel set emeralds on each side of the diamond, I love it! I don’t normally spend much on jewelry.

We’ve splurged a lot on travel lately. (Some for helping family - the Homewood Suites desk clerks near my father’s house seem to recognize us.). We spent $1000 for ability to upgrade for a year on United for more leg room. Looking at a a Viking ocean cruise next year.

My husband splurged on trip to see Eric Clapton with his brother (after they lost another brother earlier in the year). My solo splurge is Ikon ski pass, even though last year’s pass only got used twice due to family obligations and lack of snow.

I went to Wimbledon this year with some tennis friends and we splurged on Debenture Wimbledon tickets. Totally worth it and I would do it again!

Oh yes, tickets. We did pay $500/seat to watch Michigan win in the Rose Bowl a few years back. It was on my brother’s bucket list. Had I known how far we would have to walk to get to the stadium, the steep steps up to our seats, and the fact that no one sat down throughout the game so I had to stand to see….

Anyway, in retrospect, I’m glad I went.
