What furniture fits in the common space at Hegeman?

My son and his roommates are trying to work out what furniture they can put in the common space in Hegeman A. They were thinking of a little couch, but on a closer look at the floorplan there doesn’t seem to be enough wall space for that. So maybe some chairs would work better? Did someone on this site also say a table is included? Any input is greatly appreciated if you’ve seen the rooms in Hegeman.

Hi burry,

Hegeman includes no furniture other than what would be supplied in students’ rooms (i.e. standard-issue desk, chair, bed, dresser). The furniture is new, though.

We had room for a couch in our suite (although we never put one in), but we also had a fairly big common room. If you don’t think you can fit a couch, I wouldn’t bring one. Sometimes frats have furniture sales, or you may be able to find something on craigslist if you want it.

Chairs are fine, as is a small table. I might suggest Christmas lights or some sort of decoration to make the place more interesting. The suite across the hall from ours had a carpet and paintings/posters on their common room walls. Beanbag chairs are always nice… we had something like that.

The problem with Hegeman is that the common rooms tend to be weird shapes. You can fit a lot of stuff if you want to, but you’ll have to figure out how to fit it all in there. Lots of small things tend to be better than a few larger ones.

I would hold off until getting to the room. Some common rooms are very small and a couch just might not be the best choice. I would wait and check out A E Pi’s charity furniture sale (inside the living room in their house on Wriston) during move-in days. They will cut you sweet deals.

An alternative is using Craigslist once the move-in process has completed.

Thanks, those are great ideas. I really don’t think there’s enough wall space for a couch. He has found some chairs on craigslist so that might work or at least be a good start. Thanks for the info about the fraternity sale.

What are the floors like in the common area and the bedrooms-- carpeted or not?

My roommates and I had a couch and a TV, and we were really happy with that arrangement, but it was a bit cramped.

We also had RCA cable strung from room to room so that we could have the same music playing throughout the entire suite during parties. When all of us hooked our speaker systems to the central source, we had a massive 16-piece speaker system. If your son does this, people will think he’s cool, trust me. It is absolutely infuriating how many parties at Brown have a 15-watt iPod dock as the sole music source. Come on, people!

Thanks to all. Mgcsinc, I am so appreciative of your suggestions on how to facilitate his parties and I will pass that on ASAP!! Seriously, these are great ideas and except for small things, I think he and his roommates need to wait and see the space.
